How to enable more than 256 pty's?

Is it really a matter of editing:
/usr/src/sys/kern/tty_pty.c

And changing:
static char *names = "pqrsPQRS";

To increase the number of available pty's ( FreeBSD 5.4 ) or is there
a nicer way?
