RE: There is currently no usable release of FreeBSD.

Use the branch which offers (for you) the best balance of features 
and "support time remaining". Legacy isn't the same as unusable. 

We deployed on 8.1, and have upgraded steadily to 8.4. 

We're planning on rebuilding our farms using 10.1 when it becomes available.
