Villanueva's teammate Trevor Hoffman blew another save opportunity on Tuesday
against the Reds, which may open up the closer's role in the near future.
Recommendation: To date, Villanueva has been the Brewers' most consistent
(and perhaps only regularly effective)reliever. In 19 appearance,
Villanueva has a 27:8 K:BB ratio in 20.2 innings, but he remains vulnerable
to the long ball (two allowed this season, 13 in 96 innings in 2009) and may
not have an ideal arsenal to handle the job. Ultimately, if Brewers manager
Ken Macha decides to remove Hoffman, Villanueva is at least an intriguing
possibility to move into the ninth-inning role.
