With Dustin Pedroia back on the disabled list, the Sox have selected
infielder Yamaico Navarro, 22, to replace Pedroia. Navarro was hitting .283
with three homers and six RBI in Pawtucket in 16 games after hitting .274
with 8 homers and 55 RBI for Portland.

Pedroia was advised by Dr. Thomas Gill after a scan of his left foot that
he'd be better off resting it for a couple of weeks rather than trying to
play and risk injury. Pedroia went along with it. We'll have his comments
shortly.

Manager Terry Francona said a few moments ago, "Like I said yesterday, he was
sore, so we held him out of the lineup. He woke up (this morning) and he was
pretty tender. They did a scan and while it showed really good healing it
also showed there's some healing to go. The layman's version is they tried to
impress upon him that if it hurt you'd better tell us because if you don't
you're going to hurt yourself. He did that, so give him some credit. It's
hard for good players to be honest, but if he hurts it then we're looking at
something we don't want to be looking at - surgery and things like that."
