Biography
Luis Enrique came to Barca in the summer of 1996
after his contract had run out at Real Madrid.
After 5 years at the Bernabeu, his arrival at the
Nou Camp was viewed with certain reservations by
the fans, but he soon won them over with his
committed style and his obvious desire to fit in
quickly made him a crowd favourite.
Starting out at Xeitosa, he soon caught the eye
of both Oviedo and Sporting Gijon scouts and after
signing for the latter club, he made his first
division debut at the age of 19 in the 1989-90
campaign. The next season saw him really burst on
to the scene, scoring 15 goals. He was soon snapped
up by Real Madrid, but left unhappy at a lack of
support, to join Barca.
Position
Named team captain this season, Luis Enrique is a
natural leader, whose versatility makes him an
invaluable member of the squad. He is usually to
be find playing as a link man between the forwards
and midfield and his never say die attitude is a
constant inspiration to his teammates.
