Phillip John William Cocu Eindhoven (Holland) 29 October 1970 182 cm 76 kg 65 international Debut 19 August 1998 Biography Philip Cocu came to Barca on a Bosman free transfer from PSV Eindhoven at the start of the 1998-99 season. Manger Luois van Gaal had made the Dutchman's signing a principal objective for his professional attitude and versatility. Cocu was born in Eindhoven (Holland) and began his career with local club DCS. He played with a number of lower league clubs, such as De Graafschap and AFC34, before signing for second division outfit AZ. Two years later he joined Vitesse Arnhem and made his debut in the top flight in Holland. After showing his class at Vitesse, he was snapped up by PSV in 1995, where he developed into a key player, winning League Cup and Supercup titles as well as becoming a regular in the Dutch national side. Position Cocu is one of the pillars of the team, hard-working and willing to sacrifice his own game for the good of the collective, yet regularly getting onto the scoresheet. His versatility is perhaps his principal virtue and he can play in behind the forwards, in the center of midfield, out wide or even as a full back or central defender. Not only does he boast the typical skills of a Dutch player, Cocu is also a tough tackling fighter, a good header and an excellent reader of the game with a vicious left foot shot.
