Biography
Carles Puyol took his first steps in football with the modest
team of his home town. As the years passed he began to show
that he had a lot of potential and in season 1995-96 at the
age of 17 he took up residence in the Masia, the residential
training centre for the young players of FC Barcelona.
He very quickly became a central part of the Barcelona B team
and on 2nd October 1999 his dreams came true as he made his
debut with the first team.The player interested Van Gaal greatly
and he played him in a match against Valladolid.
From then on, Puyol became a regular name in the squads of the
Dutchman until he made the right hand side of defence all his
own.
Position
This year Puyol has a new challenge as the teams third captain.
His natural position is at right back but he can also play in
midfield in one of the central positions. He stands out for his
physical strength and his discipline on the pitch.
He is a player who gives his all for the team and his individual
quality makes him the ideal man when defending needs to be simple.
He is also capable of helping out in attack as he showed last
season.
Camacho turned him into one of the stalwarts of the Spanish national
team and he consolidated this in the World Cup in Korea and Japan.
