Saviola after Barca extension
Argentine striker Javier Saviola admits he would like to extend his contract
at Barcelona.
The former River Plate star has found first-team opportunities at Camp Nou
hard to come by in recent seasons with coach Frank Rijkaard having deemed
him surplus to requirements.
However, a serious injury to Samuel Eto'o has granted him a second chance
and the diminutive hit-man grasped it with both hands with a goal in the
3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao last weekend.
His refusal to move on despite a lack of playing time was attributed by many
to the hugely lucrative contract he enjoys at Barca, but Saviola insists he
is motivated by a desire to prove himself at the club and has not ruled out
the possibility of extending his stay.
"I don't care about those who have said I am staying at Barcelona just for
financial gain," he stated.
"I have a personal challenge at this club and it's not about other people
it's about me as I don't play football to make other people happy.
"If the opportunity to extend my contract at Barcelona comes then it would be
my first choice.
"I would like to stay at Barcelona but it's too early to be talking about
that as the current season has just started and you never know what will
happen."
