Even though Barcelona have everything to play for in a vital UEFA Champions
League qualifier next month, Lionel Messi prefers to take part in the Olympic
Games with the Argentine national team...
Messi is desperate to participate in Beijing this August. The Argentine
international understands that Barcelona are counting on him for a UEFA
Champions League qualifier next month, but he seems to have already decided
to defend the colours of his national team.
"I think they spoke a lot about my situation because it was a very tough
year, and now the important thing is to qualify for the Champions League. If
we didn't have to play this qualifier I think there wouldn't have been any
problem for me to go to the Olympics," stated Messi, who cannot wait to
experience what will be his first Olympic Games.
"I'm very excited about going to the Olympic Games. It is a very nice
tournament and everyone who has already experienced it recommended me to go
at-least once in my career. We have a great team, so I think we can win it."
Barcelona believe they are entitled to retain Messi's services for the
qualifier because they pay his wages and are the main reason he has become an
international superstar. But this is unlikely to help their cause in any way,
and Argentina will finally get their way.
"I didn't talk to Barcelona," said Messi. "I know that they are talking to
the AFA, and whether I have to stay in Barcelona or go to the Olympic Games,
one or the other, I will be happy. I'd like to be in both places but I know
that would be impossible. I think both parties will come to an agreement."
Messi, who launched his own brand of underwear in Buenos Aires, affirmed that
he has yet to talk to Pep Guardiola, but he is well aware that the club's
directors are doing their best to create a competitive team for next season.
"Although I haven't spoken to Guardiola I think they are doing their best to
bring in important reinforcements, and there are some who have already
arrived, but the important thing is to assemble a group that can win a title
this season," he explained.
Finally, he said that he doesn't understand why Barcelona haven't been able
to win a title in the last two years, and insisted that despite lots of
attention, he doesn't feel like the star of the team.
"I feel that some of my team-mates who have helped me very much are leaving,
and the truth is I am very sad about this," he added. "I consider myself just
one more player of the squad and I hope to win important things this year."
