Barcelona hit Sporting de Gijón for six in El Molinón with goals flying in
from all angles both before and after Gerard was sent off for the home side.
Lionel Messi (2), Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, Samuel Eto'o and an own goal gave
the Blaugrana victory. Goal.com watched the game, weighed up every player's
input and handed out marks out of ten to each one.
Valdés 6 - Had little to do, apart from race from his line for which he was
given a bruised shin for his troubles.
Alves 7 - Always looks like producing something going forward, but has yet to
full adapt to Barça's tactics and was not at his best again.
Puyol 7.5 - Given the role of stopping Sporting's Bilic from scoring and did
that with his usual powerful performance.
Márquez 6.5 - Should have done better to cut out the ball forward that led
to Sporting's goal, but was comfortable when building from the back.
Abidal 6.5 - Did not really shine downt he left, but held his position well
and offered an outlet behind Iniesta when Barça were on the attack.
Xavi 8.5 - Yet another powerful performance from the midfielder, who along
with Iniesta, will be at the centre of Spain's World Cup campaign.
Keita 7 - Was not employed to push forward and because of the lack of play at
the back in such an offensive display, his input was limited.
Busquets 8.5 - A real tower of strength in the midfield and is already
showing that he will be a Barcelona favourite for a long time to come.
Iniesta 9 - Without doubt Barcelona's best player as he showed control,
teamwork and an eye for goal both with his effort and his cross for Xavi.
Messi 7.5 - Still tended to want to do too much on his own, but his pass for
Iniesta's goal was world class and he took his goal well.
Eto'o 7 - The Cameroonian striker was well marked, but he will have no qualms
about claiming his goal even it already going in when he nodded home.
Subs
Bojan 7 - Came on and had a hand in the final goal, but did not register a
shot against a defence that was running on empty.
Cáceres 6 - Did not have enough time to do anything except take a few
touches and gain some much-needed confidence.
Gudjohnsen 7 - In much the same way as Cáceres, the Icelandic international
enjoyed moving the ball about but did not make a huge difference.
