Goal.com http://tinyurl.com/o3ejby Barcelona Could Have Won The League Without Me – Pep Guardiola Barcelona could have enjoyed just as much success if Pep Guardiola had not been in charge this term, the man himself believes... Pep Guardiola has played down his role in Barcelona's league and cup double winning season, heaping praise on the players that had made it such a successful campaign for the club. The Blaugrana tasted defeat against Real Mallorca on Sunday when the coach chose to field a number of youth and fringe players, however, he was keen to talk about where he stood in the grand scheme of things. Although the majority would disagree with his analysis, Guardiola explained that he was not the driving force behind the trophies and that the talent in the squad meant that winning was always a certainty. “The only reason is the talent and commitment of the players,” the club's official website quoted him as saying. “I’m sure that with other players we wouldn’t have won the league. Yet with a different coach they might have done so. The key is their talent, humility and appetite for hard work in every single game. “Football is about footballers. We coaches set out the rules, some ideas and get them to follow them. All the rest is them, just them and they have done a great job." Guardiola then revealed that with one league game left before the Champions League final in Rome against Manchester United, he is preparing to field another shadow squad against Osasuna next weekend. “We wanted to win the league as soon as possible so we could switch off a bit and be ready for the final. It’s a lot better to have won the league now," he explained. “My idea is that lots of players won’t play until the final in Rome. I don’ t want to take any risks, especially bearing in mind our injury list." Samuel Eto'o gave Barcelona the lead against Mallorca on Sunday, but then saw a hatful of chances go begging, including a late penalty, but that did not concern the trainer. “He didn’t seem worried to me,” Guardiola said. “We’d discussed him taking free kicks and penalties beforehand. He scored a great goal and had more chances but [home goalkeeper] Moya was great today.” Real Madrid may have lost their last three matches, but Guardiola was impressed with the way that they made Barca push on to win the league in a year when either side would normally have walked away with the crown. “I’d like to congratulate Madrid because they’ve made us dig deep. If it had been another team we would probably have wrapped it up before now. What they've done in the second half of the season is a lesson for us for the future," he added.
