Joan Laporta Reveals Barcelona Bonus From Nike After Treble Success

As football clubs across Europe start to feel the pinch of the global
financial turmoil, one side who are having no such trouble is Barcelona.
President Joan Laporta has divulged a few details about the club’s current
financial state and has assured fans and members that they have nothing to
worry about.
The Blaugrana signed a €30 million a year contract with the sportswear
giants, Nike, in 2008, and the Catalans will receive a handsome windfall
after capturing the Primera Division, Champions League and Copa del Rey
crowns.
“This year, we will almost reach €40m [with Nike] thanks to this bonus that
we received for winning all the titles,” Laporta told reporters during a ‘
Barcelona Culture’ symposium.
“Right now, we are going through one of the best moments in the club’s
history. When I took over the presidency in 2003, Barca had 105,000 [paying]
members but now it is up to 160,000.
“Our fan base is also growing. There are studies that show that we have 40
million followers across Europe and 100 million worldwide. And in the last
six years, we have accumulated a total profit of €103m.
“Those who will eventually take over the club will find that we are in a far
better shape than when I took over.”
Laporta had a warning for his rivals, who are looking to dethrone his side as
quickly as possible.
“We started a revolution in 2003, but this is a journey that has yet to be
fully developed,” he boomed.
“There will be a [presidential] candidate who will represent the continuity
in our changes, and I would like to see our project being sustained by a
member of the current board.”
Barcelona will hold their elections later this year.
