The 105 ‘little octopuses’ of Sergio Busquets
[excerpts]
...
According to El Mundo Deportivo, the performance of Sergio Busquets
in the World Cup has provoked praise in all corners of the planet,
and during the final celebration of the title (dubbed the
‘Pepe Reina Show’), two nicknames for the Barça midfielder were
revealed: ‘el Pulpo” (‘the Octopus’) and ‘el Quitanieves’ (the
‘Snow Blower’).
“They are affectionate nicknames that my teammates have given me
these days in South Africa because they say that I have long legs
and I get to all of the balls,” explained the protagonist with a
huge and logical smile. It couldn’t be any other way. Waiting for
him on the replanted grass of the municipal of Badia del Vallès in
Barcelona, were 105 ‘pulpitos,’ or ‘little octopuses,’ aspiring
to learn technique, tactics, team work, solidarity, sacrifice, and
all of the values that have brought their local idol to the top of
the universe.
They are the children that are participating in Busquets’ summer
camp, which started on Monday, July 12th. Two months ago, the Barca
midfielder had advised, “I hope I arrive late [for the start of the
camp] because that will mean that we have reached the World Cup final.”
He was true to his word, and never had a delay been more celebrated.
The 105 children, noisy like all others, quieted down when the Barcelona
midfielder appeared and became timid and obedient as they posed for the
photo with their teacher, who not so long ago was one of them. Sergio,
at age 21, was the youngest member of la selección; he turned 22 on
Friday, July 16th.
Such silence was a sign of respect for a player who had completed a
sensational World Cup. But he continues to be the same humble person
that one day seduced Pep Guardiola. And that is the secret. An example.
Asked if now he could aspire to win the ‘FIFA Balón de Oro’ after
such an exhibition, he responded firmly: “Those prizes are individual
and I am a team player. If now they talk about me it’s because the
World Cup is recent, but I am the same as always, and the important
thing is to maintain my regularity.”And concerning the suggestion
that his market value has increased, Busquets responded, “I’m not
worth anything because I have no price.”
...
One last note: in honor of their World Cup hero, the municipal of
Badia del Vallès has named their local stadium “Campo Municipal
Sergio Busquets Burgos,” which is home for CD Badia del Vallès,
in the Second Regional Division.

ZonalMarking: The final analysis, part three: brilliant Busquets

[excerpts]
...
The most interesting thing about Busquets’ role, however, was the
frequency with which he dropped between the centre-backs, allowing
them to spread into a back three, and giving the full-backs license
to get forward and provide the width Spain often lacked throughout
the tournament. This concept has been discussed at length previously
on ZM, and it was great to see Busquets, Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol
switching seamlessly between the two systems, as they do at Barcelona.
