As FC Barcelona was travelling to Seville to face Real Betis on
Wednesday, the inexhaustible factory of talents of the Ciutat
Esportivo never stops working. Its junior counterpart, Barca B,
held a new day of training that saw the ‘emotional reunion’ of
two players who aim for something a lot better than their current
squad. Two brothers who were finally united in the same team, at
least until this June: Thiago and Rafael Alcantara.

The older of the two, at 19, returned to the squad after a three
month escapade playing and training under the orders of Pep
Guardiola. And as a reward, Thiago is set for a permanent place
in the first team next season. With the recent inclusion of Ibrahim
Afellay and the absence of injuries in the first team, Pep Guardiola
decided it was better for him to get playing time with Barca B for
the time being.

Thiago’s return to the squad is the first time the Alcantara brothers
crossed paths in the same team. Up to the date, the two had only
infrequently ‘met’ when Rafinha was invited to the first team’s
training sessions. They seldom had any opportunities to train together
and now they will probably get do it until May.

Rafinha or better known as Rafa has been the solution found by Luis
Enrique due to the injuries suffered by Barca B midfielders. He made
his debut against Girona and got his first start against Salamanca,
scoring a goal and assisted in another. He turned out to be a superb
winter transfer ‘signing’ for the team. His call-up becomes even
more necessary after regular players in his position are out for a
length of time such as Carlos Carmona, who will be out for
approximately two months after going under the knife for a left
knee meniscus injury. His absence means he joins Oriol Romeu and
Sergi Romero, on the long-term injured list.

This clears the way for Rafa or, the name he used on his jersey in
the match against Salamanca: Rafinha. He chose the same name he used
when he once played indoor soccer in Vigo, where he grew up.

Thiago and Rafinha enjoyed their first joint training session on
Saturday and hoped to play together against Rayo Vallecano this weekend.

Ilie seems to have made the defensive midfielder position his own,
and Thiago is expected to take one of the central midfield spot.
Jonathan dos Santos and Rafa will be competing for the other spot in
the middle of the park. The advantage the younger Alcantara has is
the fact that he is the only left-footed midfielder in the team.
The other option though would be Victor Vazquez, who is set to be
given a medical discharge and is training well.
