Messi was left frustrated for most of the game against a disciplined Hercules
defence. He did not look his sharpest as his touch and his shooting deserted
him. But despite a laborious evening, the Argentine still managed to score
twice to move within one goal of the top in the scorer's charts.

evaporated for more than half the game.

matches without finding the back of the net.

The Portuguese was not deprived of chances, however, and was denied on two
occasions by opposition goalkeeper Ricardo.

goal, but a poor first touch forced him to turn his back to goal and allowed a

The hamstring problems that blighted the Argentine during his formative years
at the Camp Nou have been consigned to memory under Pep Guardiola, and it is no
surprise that the team has developed into, unquestionably, one of the greatest
club sides ever with him readily available and fully functioning. While his
inclusion in the side is essential, however, Barca's style is focused on the
collective, and with players of the quality of Xavi and Andres Iniesta they
would remain formidable opposition, even without the Ballon d'Or winner.

successes; should the Portuguese be missing for any extended period of time, it
would drastically alter the dynamic of the team, and given that Ronaldo is the
driving influence of the attacking quartet, a tactical rethink would be
required in order to compensate for his loss. It should be noted, too, that
when CR7 is not at his best when he is on the pitch, Madrid suffer without him
leading from the front.
