Take on the world
We live on a small island. The world doesn't pay attention to us unless
we have something to offer. We are smart, so the world comes to us when
they want to have things made. We became wealthy because we make things
the world wants. "Made in Taiwan" was once a sign of low standards, but
now stands for quality and products such as the ipod.
We are small,but we can think big. Ask a kid in Beijing how he wants to
be remembered when he grows up.He will answer that he wants a museum na-
med after him.Having a museum named after you is a crazy and wild dream
, but nevertheless, it's a big dream for a kid who has nothing. So what
do we dream about, standing on the island of Taiwan? Dare we dream to t-
ake on the world,tell the French about fashion,teach the Italians about
noodles,and ask Americans to stand in line to buy Chinese art,furniture
,and cars?
"If one man can do,another can do."is a quote from our movie column this
month.If Japanese can take on the world with Toyota and Sony, why are we
stopping at BenQ? Uniqlo is equivalent to GAP in the USA.They are the bi-
ggest fashion brand in Japan, and like MUJI,they are now setting up shop
in New York City and are ready to take on the world.ICB talked to Uniqlo
this issue to find out the secrets of their success, secrets, and ambiti-
ons.
We are just as smart and capable as any human being on this planet. We can
do anything if we set our minds to it. So, let's think big and take on the
world with our brands and manufacturing capability, one city at a time.
