Fed Official Warns About U.S. Deficit
By MICHAEL S. DERBY
June 19, 2006 10:38 a.m.
NEW YORK -- Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta President Jack Guynn said Monday
U.S. politicians need to do something about the long-term track of budget
deficits.
"We are on an unsustainable path" with the current state of government finances and "we have trouble stopping and dealing with the imbalance we know is coming," Mr. Guynn said in comments following a speech on the economy to a group of bankers in Naples, Fla.
Mr. Guynn was also asked by an audience member about the outlook for oil prices. He noted that there is "a delicate balance between world supply and world demand," and said it has been "amazing" how well the U.S. has withstood recent price increases on the energy front.
Mr. Guynn also said that it probably isn't realistic to think that oil prices will repeat past patterns of surging and then falling back. "It looks like we all need to be thinking about long term oil prices that are very different than we assumed" in the past, Mr. Guynn said.
Most of Mr. Guynn's speech was devoted to reprising a speech he gave on June 7. He said then and repeated Monday that he is a bit worried by the current level of inflation. "Headline measures of inflation of late have been bothersome, with higher oil prices contributing to much of the run-up in those broad readings."
Moreover, he said, core inflation levels, which strip out volatile food and energy costs, have "moved into the upper end of -- or beyond -- the range I consider acceptable over time."
But Mr. Guynn, a voting member of the rate setting Federal Open Market Committee, also said if growth moderates and inflation remains contained, as they are expected to do, "I would say that monetary policy is now close to where it should be." But he added "we have to remain open to rethinking our policy setting as that outlook changes."
In one difference from the speech earlier in the month, Mr. Guynn offered a positive note on the state of the banking industry. He said the sector was in a "very strong condition" and told the audience "your industry is in good position to deal with any economic shocks that may come along the way."
