OK, I'll say it first, this is my own "interpretation" of the book. Therefore everything I wrote is my own subjective opinion. I'm not major in literature, nor did I read any reviews on this book. So feel free to leave any comments, especially I analyze this book with what I learned from Social and Personality Psychology. To me, The Invisible Cities is written to describe a cycle of life, from birth, to death. I can see a lot of symbols, or underlying motif from this book. In my belief, I feel Kublai Khan (忽必烈) represents the Personality Factor of a person, while Marco Polo represents the Social Factor, or the external self of a person. Because Kublai Khan never leaves his palace in the whole book. He relies on Marco Polo's description of the outside world. In other word, the cities represents life. Or the events we encountered in life. From Birth to Death, from past to present, from present to future. By going through life, Kublai Khan and Marco Polo are trying to make a record, which is used to prove the existence of Life. If I recall correctly, Calvino lived in the age of 存在主義. Basically the very existence of life is very long, since nobody can live the life for any other. We cannot walk down the path of other people. Therefore it is necessary to prove we exist in life.. Well, let's get down to something more specific. Uh...I haven't completely sort out all 11 types of Cities, because I don't really have time recently.. I'll just list them out, and describe something about it... Here's the 11 different types of Cities: 1. Cities and memory 2. Cities and Desire 3. Cities and Signs 4. Thin Cities 5. Trading Cities 6. Cities and eyes 7. Cities and names 8. Cities and the dead 9. Cities and the sky 10. Continuous Cities 11. Hidden cities. 1. Cities and Memory. Memory is something of the past. Our living records of the past. Something disappeared, and only existed in our brain. Therefore memory is the "Beginning". The foundations that forms our "selves". 2. Cities and Desire: What we wanted. What we desired. Desire of the flesh(2). Desire to improve (4). Something we try to get. To enjoy our lives, to have a sense of achievements.... 3. Cities and Signs. To name, to mark, represent what's inside of the mind, the ideal events we wish to have, or the descriptions and reality. (Inside the mind) 4. Thin Cities: Thin as "incomplete". We try to fill the emptiness with belief, as belief worn down by time, we still feel empty...Therefore we try to fill the emptiness....and then ending the life because we know... (Age, Growth of the mind..) 5. Trading Cities: Interactions, social network, or the social life. 6. Cities and Eyes. How other people see each other...They only see the surface. 7. Cities and Names: The norms and family...what's the meaning of names, names through history, etc. Name is something you call, you think. A symbol. 8. Cities and Dead: Replacement. Life approach the end...the cycles between life and death.. 9. Cities and Sky: Fate: The pattern of fate, also the order and consistency. Sorry, the last two categories are still incomplete. And those were the generally feelingsI have toward each categories, which is the combination of each 5 cities in each categories....Because each city give me different revelation of the book. Please correct me if there's any inconsistency...or anything illogical. -- Sincerely, Albert -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 130.126.245.59
