文法中「共通部分的省略」原則是：
一個句子若有兩個（以上）的共通部分時，可保留其一，省略另一個重
複的部分。
主要省略方式是「述部動詞共通部分的省略」
例一：He studied music in Vienna and (studied) painting in Paris.
他在維也納唸音樂，在巴黎學繪畫
例二：He was reading something but I don't know what (he was reading).
他在讀一些東西，但我不知道他唸的是什麼
例三：Mr. Brown teaches us mathematics and Mrs. Smith (teaches us)
English.
布朗老師教我們數學，史密斯老師教我們英語
重點是：以動詞為中心，可以向前向後，但是所省略的文字一定要完全一樣
（這與比較句型的省略不同），而且省略的文字要連續，不能跳躍。
所以，原題目答案 C 就不符規則。

所以不能省略中間是因為「時態不一致」，另外省略文字有跳躍。但若改成

則可以。

個人有些看法：這個 them 是誰？是 apples 嗎？還是 three apples？
Yesterday I ate three apples, and today I ate five of APPLES.
Yesterday I ate three apples, and today I ate five of THREE APPLES.
好像兩句話都怪怪的。
