第一次看到gmat版這麼熱鬧, 大家見解都很好, 因為這題是在下比較擅長的比較結構,
這邊A2也想分享一些資訊給大家, 沒有引戰的意思, 歡迎大家探討：

Digging in sediments in northern China, scientist have gathered evidence
suggesting that complex life-forms emerged much earlier
than previously thought.

比較結構最基本精神就是可以還原成兩個完整句子, 這裡的previously thought是大眾觀
點的省略句型, 大眾觀點句型在標準英文有兩種表達方式：

1. It is thought that S+V+O.
2. S is thought to V+O.

也就是虛主詞it配that子句, 實主詞S配不定詞to, 所以previously thought這句還原
如以下第二句：

1. complex life-forms emerged much early.

2. it was previously thought that complex life-forms emerged much early.
or complex life-forms were previously thought to emerge much early.

Applying a new method for analyzing the chemistry of tooth enamel,
scientists have examined molars of prehuman ancestors and
determined that their diets were more varied than had been supposed.

    1. their diets were varied
    2. theri diets had been supposed to be varied

其實這種句型就像是時間點不同比較一樣, 表達大眾觀點idea可視為是一種時態, 將
時間點不同比較句型對照如下：

Stock levels for domestic crude oil are far lower than in past years.

1. Stock levels for domestic crude oil are low.
2.（Stock levels for domestic crude oil were low）in past years.


歸納一下, 其實previously thought就像in the past一樣可視為表達一種時間, 還原
回來還是要講究比較結構的精神, 除了平衡對稱外就是整句和整句比, 希望這些研究

推 xiezl:看起來A2也決定不要糾結在OG不清不楚的解釋上了。
→ xiezl:另外，上面中有三處需修正。
→ xiezl:一、much 不修飾 原級形容詞，所以不會有 much early 的寫法
→ xiezl:二、還原出來的兩句，句意與原文正相反。
→ xiezl:三、it 其實不是虛主詞，應該是「形式主詞」或「先行主詞」
→ xiezl:不過這個分辨對學生來說不太重要。
