我的看法是 not the products of natural selection but simply random by-products
即可平衡(not A but B)，不需補出are
因此想問一定要選D的理由，謝謝！

→ gohank: (C)but會有兩種解釋方式,一種是你提的,另一則是跟because
→ gohank: 後面的子句做轉折,如果讀者還要花時間去思考
→ gohank: 那句子就不夠concise,補出are可以讓讀者直接對到第一種
