這句話基本上可以先拆成兩大部分，即 Sentence A, but sentence B
Sentence A是
His thesis works relatively well when applied to discrimination against
Blacks in the United States
主要要講的是「他的這篇論文寫地相對地不錯」
後面的when子句帶出的是對於這篇論文到底是怎麼樣的論文
「當用到在美對黑人之種族隔離」(為了中文語法順暢，我有做調整^^")
所以Sentence A的意思就是
「他這篇論文應用到美國對黑人之種族隔離上相對來講滿不錯的」
Sentence B則是
but his definition of racial prejudice as
"racially-based negative prejudgments against a group generally accepted as
a race in any given region of ethnic competition," can be interpreted as also
including hostility toward such ethnic groups as the Chinese in California
and the Jews in medieval Europe
既然有用到relatively，那就要注意一下，為什麼他不是直接說這論文太黯然太銷魂
還要說個，相對來講不錯
所以後面用了but來聯接Sentence B，這很合理，符合我們看到relatively時會有的猜測
his definition of racial prejudice can be interpreted as XX
是這句話的主幹
把後面的修飾補進來就是
「他將種族歧視定義作：對一個在有種族競爭的任一地區，通常被認為是一個種族的群體
以種族為基礎的負面偏見」
有點拗口...，但基本上他第一個as就是作為，book as a valuable treasure之類的
第二的as則是以甚麼樣的方式被接受，a group generally "accepted as" X
所以其實也是第一個的as，如果你想要把他當作是"accept"的搭配也可以啦@@
第三個則是his definition can be interpreted as X
這個as跟accept as也一樣，你把它直接當成第一種的也可以當成第二種的
所以整個sentence B要談的就是
「他把種族歧視定義成blah blah可以被詮釋到包含在加州的排華問題以及
中古歐洲的仇猶。」
意思就是說，他的論文在談對黑人的種族隔離上是滿不錯的沒錯，可是他對
種族歧視的定義太寬鬆了，會把其他的東西包近來
這些被包進來的東西，可能不是他要處理的，因此沒辦法把他論文的結論應用上去
這個問題其實滿常在人文社會學科的論文出現的
哲學家尤其愛做這種事情...
生物學家將代謝定義成blah blah
就會有哲學家會興奮地跑過去問蠟燭燃燒是不是一種代謝...

其實我是覺得這三個as都是同一種as啦...當然我可能錯 囧
