Google unveils Android Mobile Platform, no gPhone
After months of rumors, Google today introduced Android, an open-source
mobile operating system. That's it! There is no gPhone. Google already
confirmed it a long time ago.
This new mobile platform was developed by the Open Handset Alliance, a group
of 30+ members including Google, Motorola, HTC, Qualcomm, T-Mobile and Sprint
Nextel. Some of the biggest companies that are missing out are Verizon,
Vodafone and AT&T.
The goal of this group is to create new cost-effective mobile services and
(unlike Apple) will be releasing an SDK even before the actual handset.
For interested developers, the Open Handset Alliance will release the SDK on
November 12 and are expecting to see first handsets running the new OS around
the second half of 2008. As expected, right after the news hit, Google stock
jumped from $710 per share to $726.
