Work hard, play hard, that’s our motto: Huang
SANA’A, Yemen (21st FIBA Asia U18 Championship):
Roman Huang has seen the ups and downs of Chinese
Taipei basketball first hand. He came into the coaching
scheme of things in the East Asian nation as an assistant
coach at the 2000 FIBA Asia U18 Championship at
Kuala Lumpur when the team went on to win the bronze,
but four years later in the same position from the
bench he could only guide the team to a fifth place
finish at the 2004 edition at Bangalore.
A decade of such mixed experiences later,
the 40-year-old is back this time as the chief helmsan.
“Many of those players (2000) went on to form the
core of the current Senior team,” Huang recalled
fondly in a conversation with this correspondent after Taipei
scored a runaway victory over Malaysia
on Thursday.
Excerpts
On the team’s performance so far
One was a close game, which we lost in Overtime. And
the other not too difficult a win. I guess we are doing alright.
We lost too many rebounds yesterday (against Iran).
Also we lost focus when it really mattered. We did well to
fight back from being down, but lost it thereafter.
I thought that was a game we could have won. But then
you gotta take it as it comes.
I think today (against Malaysia), we played some real
good defense.
I was worried a little when we took that huge lead
(Taipei led 22-8 at the end of the first half, and
39-18 at the end of the first half). But the boys
came along well.
On the preparations for the Championship
We had some good preparations.
We concentrated on playing pressure defense.
In Taipei, the biggest problem is that we lack size.
We have to work around that and plan our game.
I have been trying to get the boys to concentrate on
contesting each and every shot irrespective of the
position in the game or scoreboard.
Even today that’s exactly what we did.
On the potential of the players
I think five of these boys are ready to play the pro
league. And the others have shown good promise to
follow suit.
Like I said, we do not have enough taller players
to take our teams to the next level. We are constantly
looking to compensate for that with our pressure
defense and fast breaks.
Our motto is simple: work hard, play hard.
