Dodgers stifled by Pirates
Club manages just six hits; Little praises Kuo in defeat

Two months and a couple false starts into the season and Grady Little
finally has the rotation he's wanted.
After announcing the Tuesday return of Jason Schmidt, he took the wraps
off Hong-Chih Kuo Saturday night. And although Kuo suffered the 3-1
loss to the Pirates in his first start of the year, his manager was
talking about wins afterward.


經過開季以來的調整，Little終於排定了他心目中的先發輪值表。

"We've got a lot of confidence in the kid and we know he's going to
pitch well," Little said after Kuo's eventful 4 2/3 innings. "We feel
confident the people we run out there now have a chance to win games."

No surprise he feels that way about Schmidt, who takes back his job
from Mark Hendrickson after seven weeks on the disabled list, or Derek
Lowe, his Opening Day starter, and certainly not with his pair of
seven-game winners, Brad Penny and Randy Wolf.

But the confidence in Kuo has more to do with potential than
performance, because Kuo has more Tommy John elbow reconstructions
(two) than Major League victories (one).

Yet he's been Little's presumed choice as fifth starter since Spring
Training, ahead of Chad Billingsley, and not even Kuo's shoulder injury
has shaken Little's confidence.

In part, there's Kuo's stated and documented preference for starting
over relieving, whereas Billingsley has succeeded in relief. But Little

kept his club in Game 2 of the NLCS, a rookie against the Mets at Shea
Stadium.

And Little is naturally intrigued with a left-handed pitcher who throws
hard and handcuffs right-handed hitters. They can't be found just
anywhere.

"He's deceptive and tough to hit when he's throwing strikes," said
Little. "I'm not looking at the number of games he's won. I'm looking
at the number I feel he's going to win."

This, however, wasn't one of them, even though the Pirates tried very
hard to make it so, having three runners erased trying for home, two in
a sixth inning that started with home run, double, double and ended
with only one run scoring.

But the Dodgers' offense did even less against Ian Snell. New third
baseman Tony Abreu had three hits, two of them doubles, the one in the
second inning scoring Mike Lieberthal for the only run. They had one
more big chance, with runners on second and third and one out in the
seventh inning, but pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit and Juan Pierre struck
out.

They also saw shortstop Rafael Furcal reinjure the left ankle that had
him on the disabled list the first two weeks of the season. The fact
that it turned so easily while he was merely planting to change
directions is an indication that it never fully healed and will
probably nag at him until he can rest it over the winter.

The productive shortstop has a high threshold of pain, but the weakened
ankle seems to be a large reason why he's gone from 15 home runs last
season to none so far this year. His .364 slugging percentage is well
below last year's .445.

Furcal remained in the game and said he expected to play Sunday.

Kuo wasn't around anywhere near the end. The first inning started with
three soft singles, then he hit Xavier Nady with a pitch and walked
Adam LaRoche with the bases loaded, but escaped when Andre Ethier threw
out Freddy Sanchez at the plate trying to tag on Ronny Paulino's fly to
end the inning.

"He wasn't very lucky," said Little. "I'm glad he didn't buy my
Powerball tickets today."

With that reprieve, though, Kuo suddenly was pitching like the
hard-throwing lefty Little envisioned, but the high pitch count took
its toll. When Luis Gonzalez made a desperate running catch of
Sanchez's fifth-inning fly into the deepest nook and cranny of PNC
Park, Little had seen enough after 94 pitches and 4 2/3 innings.

"He's tough to catch," said Lieberthal, spelling catcher Russell
Martin, who lined out as a pinch-hitter. "His ball cuts in on
right-handers with a lot of movement and they don't get good swings.
When he gets ahead in the count, he can be nasty."

Brett Tomko finished off the fifth, but started the sixth by serving up
a long homer to Nady. He somehow escaped further damage despite
back-to-back doubles when the Pirates had a pair erased at the plate,
one on a rundown in which Furcal reinjured his ankle, another on a
blown squeeze play. Rudy Seanez was electrifying in his two innings of
relief with five strikeouts.


Tomko第五局中繼上場，但第六局一開始就被Nady擊出一隻大號全壘打。他莫名奇妙
少失一分，當海盜隊的接連二壘安打和跑壘失誤造成本壘前出局。Seanez表現則十分
精彩，他在最後二局中投出五次三振。
