L.A.'s three-peat sinks Maine

Consecutive HRs keep Mets slidin'

LOS ANGELES - Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse for
the Mets, along came Hong-Chih Kuo.

The Dodger lefty not only kept Met hitters in a free-fall, but Kuo also
provided the ultimate insult when he hit the third of L.A.'s
back-to-back-to-back homers on consecutive pitches in the second inning
that punctuated a dismal 4-1 loss for the Mets.

As if Kuo's mammoth blast wasn't enough, he admired it a la Manny
Ramirez on his way to first base.

The Mets have lost four straight and eight of nine. They ensured they
will lose their fourth straight series - their longest skid in that
category since losing six straight series from Aug. 26-Sept. 15, 2005,
during Willie Randolph's inaugural season as manager, when the Mets
tumbled out of the wild-card race. It doesn't get any easier tonight as
they face L.A. ace Brad Penny (7-1) and then get the red-hot Yankees
this weekend in the Bronx.

The Mets (36-27) remained two games ahead of the Braves in the NL East,
but third-place Philadelphia closed to within three games.

"This is a test of our character, and what were made of," David Wright
said. "We're not playing the type of baseball we're capable of. It's
getting to the point where it's beyond a little slump, a little
rut....This isn't us; this isn't what we're about."

For the fourth straight game, the Mets took an early lead and for the
fourth straight time saw if vanish quickly. How quick? Try two pitches.

Wilson Betemit tied the game with a one-out blast off John Maine. One
pitch later, Matt Kemp's homer made it 2-1. Up stepped Kuo, who crushed
Maine's first pitch, and flipped his bat and admired the ball as it
sailed into the right-field bleachers.

The Dodger pitcher's home-run act didn't sit too well with Willie
Randolph.

sarcastically. "Obviously John made some pitches in the wrong location,
and they jumped on them. He threw the ball pretty well, but he sailed in
a little bit."

Maine had his back to Kuo, and didn't catch his counterpart's styling
until he saw a replay.

across the plate, that's going to happen. You have to settle down
because it's still 3-1. It's still a winnable ballgame."

The three L.A. longballs traveled a combined 1,267 feet, with Kemp's
447-foot shot the first to reach the loge level at Dodger Stadium in
23months.

The last time a Met had surrendered homers to three straight batters:
Opening Day in 1997 at San Diego, when Chris Gomez, Rickey Henderson and
Quilvio Veras did it against Pete Harnisch in what became an 11-run
sixth inning. At least Harnisch had an excuse for hitting a wall after
facing one over the minimum batters through five innings. He was
suffering from withdrawal symptoms including insomnia after quitting a
13-year smokeless-tobacco habit.

The last time a team hit three homers on as many pitches occurred last
Sept.18 on the last three of the four straight hit by the Dodgers in the
bottom of the ninth inning in an 11-10, 10-inning victory over San
Diego.

Maine (6-4) is 1-4 with a no-decision in his past sixstarts. The Mets
are 1-5 over that stretch after winning Maine's first seven starts of
'07. Last night, Maine departed trailing 3-1 in the sixth after a
one-out single by Betemit put runners on the corners. Joe Smith entered
and got a grounder to third base from Kemp, but the infield single
scored Luis Gonzalez for the fourth run charged to Maine.

Maine allowed more than three runs for only the second time this season
- the other coming May 20, when he allowed five runs in five innings in
a 6-2 loss to the Yankees.

Only a half-inning before the homer barrage, the Mets had taken a 1-0
lead on Carlos Delgado's RBI single that scored Wright. Wright extended
his hitting streak to 14 with a single off Kuo for his 500th career hit.
He then stole second to get into scoring position for Delgado. Wright is
14-for-14 on steals this season. Kevin McReynolds has the club record
for perfection, going 21-for-21 in 1988.

That was the lone run scored off Kuo (1-1), who went seven innings.

"The pitching is solid - we need to score runs," Wright said. "It's on
the offense."
