Would you like to go surfing, snowboarding and water-skiing -all at the
same time? That may sound impossible, but it's not. Combine all those sports an
d you get wakeboarding. It's the world's fastest-growing water sport.
A wakeboard look a snowboard, only shorter and wider. A motorboat pulls
the wakeboard rider through the water, traveling at around 20 miles an hour. T
he boat's wake acts as a ramp. The rider can use the wake to perform thrilling
tricks, like the jumps and flips of a snow boarder.
Wakeboarding had its beginnings in 1985. that year San Diego surfer Ton
y Finn created the "skurfer"-a cross between water skis and a surfboard. In 199
2, wakeboarders began competing professionally. Their exposure on ESPN quickly
created public interest in wakeboarding.
Since then, the sport has gained popularity worldwide. Wakeboarding fes
tivals and competitions have been held in Singapore and Hong Kong. China's Chen
Li Li won first place in women's wakeboarding at the 2005 World Games. As moreA
