Tennis: Sugiyama-Hantuchova pair knocked out of U.S. Open doubles

Japan's Ai Sugiyama and partner Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia
missed out on a place in the women's doubles quarterfinals after a 6-3, 3-6,
7-5 loss to Chinese pair Yan Zi and Zheng Jie in the U.S. Open on Monday.
No. 5 seeds Sugiyama and Hantuchova survived match points against the
unseeded pair but finally ran out of steam in a third-round match that could
have ended in a different result if the Slovakian had been in better shape.
"My partner was a bit out of form and I tried to lead our team
throughout the match, making me pretty tired in the end," Sugiyama
said. "I think this was a match that we should have won."
Sugiyama later returned to secure a spot in the mixed double quarterfinals
after she and Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe downed Spaniard Medina Garrigues
and Gaston Etlis of Argentina 6-3, 6-4 in the second round.
