Hawks Press Release - The Atlanta Hawks today signed rookie forward Marvin
Williams to a contract, according to Executive Vice President/General Manager
Billy Knight. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Atlanta
chose Williams in the first round (2nd overall) of the 2005 NBA Draft, held
June 28 in New York. The pick marked Atlanta’s highest selection since
drafting 1st overall in 1975.
An early-entry candidate for the 2005 NBA Draft, Williams provided key
frontcourt depth off the bench to help University of North Carolina claim the
2005 NCAA title. His tip-in with 1:26 remaining in the NCAA championship game
vs. Illinois broke a 70-70 tie, propelling UNC to a 75-70 victory. He was
named Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Rookie of the Year and was a unanimous
selection to the ACC All-Freshman Team. Williams also earned All-Conference
Honorable Mention honors.
