Becker tips Hewitt By LEO SCHLINK January 20, 2004 BORIS Becker has joined the chorus of past champions predicting a swift return to the peaks of the game for Lleyton Hewitt. The former world No. 1 believes Hewitt can deliver Australia's first national men's crown since Mark Edmondson in 1976, but will be tested by the three clear-cut favourites – Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and Andy Roddick. "We should not under-estimate that Lleyton Hewitt was No. 1 for two years in a row," Becker, the 1996 Melbourne Park champion, said. "And that's something that doesn't happen by surprise. "I think he will come back stronger this year and show those who were criticising what he was doing last year that he is a tough competitor and a great player. "Australians love their local heroes and I'm sure they'll all be behind him. "He's probably missed not winning a Slam [last year] and he's the kind of player who thrives on the big occasion." Hewitt practised with British star Tim Henman at the National Tennis Centre yesterday ahead of his first-round clash today with American qualifier Cecil Mamiit. Hewitt has not dropped a set to the 195th-ranked baseliner in two previous meetings. The South Australian slipped from world No. 1 in June to a season-ending mark of 17th – a status traced to his first-round Wimbledon defeat and no matches in rankings tournaments following the US Open in September. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 218.175.226.55
