The pressure is on Lleyton Hewitt to put a final exclamation
mark on a career that has divided Australia, Will Swanton
writes.

remember one thing: if 26-year-old Hewitt never wins another
tennis match, if he never again picks up a yellow Yonex and
fidgets with the strings like some lunatic who needs a
straitjacket, he's already guaranteed a place high on the
list of Australia's greatest players.

Callum Beale, his official hitting partner. We're unsure of

Hewitt's first match at the Rome Masters last week was a loss
to Oscar Hernandez, who ranked with Beale for anonymity as

must watch. No one to love. No one to hate. Nothing is worse
than indifference.

barnstorming Davis Cup clash in Melbourne, we loved him. The
racial drama involving James Blake: hated him. Wimbledon:
loved him. Calling linesmen spastics: hate. On it goes, love,
hate, love, hate.

"There's a bit of a problem with his image," Newcombe says.
Which is up there with the captain of the Titanic saying
"There's a bit of a problem with the boat."

Newcombe is a former world No.1 and multiple Wimbledon
champion. He knows Hewitt better than most. It was Newcombe
who gave Hewitt his first chance to play Davis Cup in 1999,
and it's Newcombe who remains one of his confidants.

Hewitt cannot be all bad. He was engaged to arguably the nice
st woman on the planet, Kim Clijsters. She wouldn't date any
old halfwit, surely, let alone have a stage in her life where
she thought he was the one. When that relationship fell
apart, Hewitt married Cartwright, who, given the way she
cuddled and laughed with Ruby-baby at that cafe, may be the
world's biggest sweetheart. She wouldn't waste her time on
any old bonehead, would she?

Sensitivity isn't thought to be one of Hewitt's defining char
acteristics but Newcombe believes the mass of emotions
associated with the end of one serious relationship and the
start of another took a heavy toll.

"The last couple of years have been tough for him," he says.
"When you have a change in your life, it can be hard. You're

devoting yourself 100 per cent to your job but everyone else
still is. So they all start beating you. It can be tough to
separate your personal and professional lives when there are
adjustments to be made."

Given Hewitt's loss to Oscar What's-His-Face in Rome, the
signs for a possible Hewitt resurgence don't appear to be
extraordinarily flash. But Newcombe swears there is a renewed
vigour in Hewitt, not solely caused by winning a free lunch
after a game of golf.

"I see him wanting to dedicate the next three years to finish
ing off his career properly and being as good as he can be,"
Newcombe says.

"He was the one who had to make up his mind about putting in
again, or not, and he's done that. He has a lot of great wins

"But you can't live in the past and underneath everything els
e, you've still got your own pride. He's only 26 and when he

Fair enough. But I've got a good chance against Nadal on all
the surfaces except clay. Everyone else, well, I know I can
beat them'.

see him winning slams: Wimbledon or the US Open. Apart from
the French Open, there's only one bloke who can stop him at
the other three and that's Federer. I think we're going to
see Lleyton at his best one more time before he's done."

Hewitt has been on tour for a decade. In the beginning, when
he knocked over Andre Agassi in Adelaide as a 16-year-old, he
looked like Bart Simpson: baggy shorts, cap on backwards,
cocky as all get-out.

en more to do with what's been happening off the court. That'
s what took his mind off the job. He wasn't doing the
training that he used to. He has a physical game and when you
have to work as hard as he does, but you're not as match fit
and tough as you should be, you still push yourself but your
body can't go that far any more. So you get injuries. He was
n't training as much so he wasn't 100 per cent so he got
hurt, and then he couldn't get match fit because he was hurt.
He's breaking that cycle."
Newcombe說："我不同意，我覺得他的狀態是和他球場下發生的事有關

Hewitt's European jaunt takes him to Stuttgart this week then
to Paris, Queens and Wimbledon. Anyone who can get the evil
eye while eating breakfast at an Avalon cafe will never roll
over without a fight. He will not win the French Open, but he
will fight.
If Newcombe is right and all this claycourt stuff is just Hew
itt's tune-up for his real target, Wimbledon, maybe he's
being written off too soon. Maybe he can dig into those deep
places few of us have and get into the quarter-finals,
semi-finals, final. Whatever happens, he will remain
compulsive viewing because no one can accuse Australia's best
player since Newcombe of being boring beyond belief.
