The fight of his life May 13, 2007 http://www.smh.com.au/news/tennis/the-fight-of-his-life/2007/ 05/12/1178899167739.html The pressure is on Lleyton Hewitt to put a final exclamation mark on a career that has divided Australia, Will Swanton writes. remember one thing: if 26-year-old Hewitt never wins another tennis match, if he never again picks up a yellow Yonex and fidgets with the strings like some lunatic who needs a straitjacket, he's already guaranteed a place high on the list of Australia's greatest players. He's been a true Davis Cup phenomenon. He's been the world No.1. He's won the US Open and Wimbledon. He's won Wimbledon. Nothing beats that. But with the French Open just around le corner, starting on May 28, the battler is battling. He can't get match practice because he can't win a match. His days are spent flogging balls with some bloke called Callum Beale, his official hitting partner. We're unsure of the quality of Beale's official hitting, but it's doubtful his forehands pack the same punch as Rafael Nadal's. Rafael Nadal。 Hewitt's first match at the Rome Masters last week was a loss to Oscar Hernandez, who ranked with Beale for anonymity as they wandered around the back courts of Foro Italico. "I wasn't surprised to see Lleyton lose in Rome," says John N ewcombe, one of the few people allowed into Hewitt's inner sa nctum. John Newcombe( 少數能打進Hewitt'圈子的人)說:"我不驚訝在羅馬 賽小希會輸球。" "He hasn't played much. I don't think he'd be expecting great results just yet. He'd be hoping to hit some really good form by the time Wimbledon comes around. Any wins or match play he gets between now and then is a bonus. "For now, he's not match tough, but I'll tell you what he is: fresh in his mind for the first time in years. He's determined to fight his way back to the top four in the world and I'll be surprised if he doesn't get there." Hewitt is nothing if not interesting. Infuriating, but intere sting. Rugby is boring beyond belief not just because the matches are a yawn but because there isn't one high-profile player to care about. To be enthralled by. There's no one we must watch. No one to love. No one to hate. Nothing is worse than indifference. When Hewitt called Australians stupid we hated him. When he conjured up a phenomenal, inspiring, goose-bump-the-size-of- golf-balls recovery to beat Federer in five sets in a barnstorming Davis Cup clash in Melbourne, we loved him. The racial drama involving James Blake: hated him. Wimbledon: loved him. Calling linesmen spastics: hate. On it goes, love, hate, love, hate. .... "There's a bit of a problem with his image," Newcombe says. Which is up there with the captain of the Titanic saying "There's a bit of a problem with the boat." Newcombe is a former world No.1 and multiple Wimbledon champion. He knows Hewitt better than most. It was Newcombe who gave Hewitt his first chance to play Davis Cup in 1999, and it's Newcombe who remains one of his confidants. Two weeks ago, before leaving for Rome and the beginning of h is European campaign, Hewitt played 18 holes of golf with Dar ren Cahill against Newcombe and Wally Masur in Sydney. Hewitt and Cahill won by a single stableford point to earn themselv es a free raid on the bistro. "He's shy, you know, but he's got this fire in his belly on the court," Newcombe says of Hewitt's glacier-sized image problem. "Unfortunately, because of that fire and competitiveness, som e bad things were written about him early in his career. A certain number of the media didn't like him, and a certain number did. The ones that didn't like him, it didn't matter what he did, they just wrote bad things about him. "He took that to heart and turned off all media and since the n it's become a war, which is a shame. "It's hard for someone like me to convince him that it's not a battle you want to get into. Pat Rafter went through the sa me thing in 1995-96. He felt the pressure from the media, but he learned to go with the flow. "You media guys are just doing your job. Some of you will be pricks, but the majority of you will be pretty good guys. From that moment, Pat enjoyed a terrific relationship with the media. But if Lleyton tells you to get f---ed, you're not going to sit down and write something nice about him, are you?" Probably not, Newk. Newk。 "But that's basically what has happened," he says. "I hope in the next couple of years people get to see more of the good in him, because it's there. "It wouldn't matter if Lleyton won the grand slam, one journo in particular is going to keep knocking the crap out of him. And for what? Because he yells 'Come on' when he's playing? He doesn't deserve that. "Lleyton has put himself on the line for his country. By 25 years of age, he'd won more Davis Cup matches than anyone in the history of Australian tennis. "That speaks for itself, yet they keep kicking him. I think m ore people enjoy watching him than don't, a lot more. We'll see what happens, but I hope the Lleyton Hewitt story ends up a good story." Hewitt cannot be all bad. He was engaged to arguably the nice st woman on the planet, Kim Clijsters. She wouldn't date any old halfwit, surely, let alone have a stage in her life where she thought he was the one. When that relationship fell apart, Hewitt married Cartwright, who, given the way she cuddled and laughed with Ruby-baby at that cafe, may be the world's biggest sweetheart. She wouldn't waste her time on any old bonehead, would she? Sensitivity isn't thought to be one of Hewitt's defining char acteristics but Newcombe believes the mass of emotions associated with the end of one serious relationship and the start of another took a heavy toll. "The last couple of years have been tough for him," he says. "When you have a change in your life, it can be hard. You're on one course [engaged to Clijsters] and that relationship breaks up, and you meet someone else and you get married and you have a child. "If you want to look at it in professional terms, it can stop you from dedicating yourself to the task. "It happens to all sportspeople. When something happens in your private life, you take your eye off the ball. You're not devoting yourself 100 per cent to your job but everyone else still is. So they all start beating you. It can be tough to separate your personal and professional lives when there are adjustments to be made." Given Hewitt's loss to Oscar What's-His-Face in Rome, the signs for a possible Hewitt resurgence don't appear to be extraordinarily flash. But Newcombe swears there is a renewed vigour in Hewitt, not solely caused by winning a free lunch after a game of golf. While the rest of the tennis fraternity predicts the end is nigh, Newcombe can see a major championship in London or New York finishing with Hewitt holding the silverware. "I see him wanting to dedicate the next three years to finish ing off his career properly and being as good as he can be," Newcombe says. "He was the one who had to make up his mind about putting in again, or not, and he's done that. He has a lot of great wins behind him and they'll never be forgotten. They're in the books for all time. "But you can't live in the past and underneath everything els e, you've still got your own pride. He's only 26 and when he looks at the field, he says, 'OK, the two at the top [Federer and Nadal] . . . I've got a lot of problems with the No.1. Fair enough. But I've got a good chance against Nadal on all the surfaces except clay. Everyone else, well, I know I can beat them'. "What is he? Seven-one over Andy Roddick? He genuinely knows he can beat everyone else when he's at his best. I think he's keen like he was three years ago. He sort of lost some of that desire for a while, but he's ready to go again. I can see him winning slams: Wimbledon or the US Open. Apart from the French Open, there's only one bloke who can stop him at the other three and that's Federer. I think we're going to see Lleyton at his best one more time before he's done." Hewitt has been on tour for a decade. In the beginning, when he knocked over Andre Agassi in Adelaide as a 16-year-old, he looked like Bart Simpson: baggy shorts, cap on backwards, cocky as all get-out. In 2001, he became the youngest world No.1 in history. Every point was played as though it were his last. He ran himself ragged and had to because none of his strokes are bombs. He had to fight for everything and the risk was that he would burn out in his mid-20s. Now, with his ranking outside the top 20 and his body showing signs of falling apart at the seams, is that the problem? Were the doomsayers right? Did burnout get him? "I wouldn't agree with that," Newcombe says. "I think it's be en more to do with what's been happening off the court. That' s what took his mind off the job. He wasn't doing the training that he used to. He has a physical game and when you have to work as hard as he does, but you're not as match fit and tough as you should be, you still push yourself but your body can't go that far any more. So you get injuries. He was n't training as much so he wasn't 100 per cent so he got hurt, and then he couldn't get match fit because he was hurt. He's breaking that cycle." Hewitt's European jaunt takes him to Stuttgart this week then to Paris, Queens and Wimbledon. Anyone who can get the evil eye while eating breakfast at an Avalon cafe will never roll over without a fight. He will not win the French Open, but he will fight. If Newcombe is right and all this claycourt stuff is just Hew itt's tune-up for his real target, Wimbledon, maybe he's being written off too soon. Maybe he can dig into those deep places few of us have and get into the quarter-finals, semi-finals, final. Whatever happens, he will remain compulsive viewing because no one can accuse Australia's best player since Newcombe of being boring beyond belief.
