South American champions Sao Paolo held on to defeat Al Ittihad 3-2 thanks to a Marcio Amoroso brace and a finish from the penalty spot by goalkeeper Rogerio Ce ni. The Asian champions however proved to be worthy opponents in this semifinal of the inaugural FIFA Club World Championship. Sao Paolo have now advanced to Su nday’s final where they will meet the winner of the other semifinal between Dep ortivo Saprissa and Liverpool. The two teams produced a delightful match with numerous chances and Al Ittihad c an be proud of their performance after beginning the match as heavy underdogs. S ao Paolo showed flashes of brilliance though the Brazilians won’t be overly hap py with their overall display. Sao Paolo controlled the early exchanges, though there were no chances for eithe r side in the game’s first minutes. 8 minutes in, Sao Paolo produced the first opportunity of the match as Amoroso crossed for the on-rushing Cicinho, but the Real Madrid-bound defender’s blast from 8 yards was wide. Soon after Diego Luga no’s close range header was also wide as Sao Paolo set about controlling the ma tch. In the 15th minute Sao Paolo continued to show their attacking intent as a fanta stic long ball by Josue found Amoroso who worked his way into the box, but was m uscled off the ball before getting his shot off. A minute later however, Sao Paolo opened the scoring. There was some good fortun e for Paolo Autori’s side as Amoroso chested down a loose ball and his deflecte d shot beat the wrong-footed Mabrouk Zaid. Sao Paolo continued to force the issue and were searching for a second goal. Dan ger-man Amoroso was at it again after 20 minutes, but he couldn’t keep his head er down after a cross by Junior. Just when it seemed that Sao Paolo were settling comfortably and dominating the match, Al Ittihad slowly came to life. The first evidence of this was a countera ttack that saw Kallon break free, but his shot was embarrassingly off target. After a good spell of pressure by Al Ittihad, the equalizer came and it was Sund ay’s goalscorer Mohammed Noor who scored again for the Saudi Arabian side. Ceni made an initial save from a shot by Kallon, but succeeded only in knocking the ball into Noor’s path as the on-rushing captain beat Ceni to the rebound and sc ored into an open net after 33 minutes. Minutes later, there was a great opportunity for Al Ittihad to take the lead. A swift counter-attack saw Kallon take off once again, but after dribbling into th e box his fierce shot was beaten away by Ceni. As the half came to an end, another upset seemed possible by the Saudis as they finished the first half on top. Sao Paolo had lost their early control and seeme d to be on the back foot. Yet, if there was any question as to how the Brazilians would respond, it was an swered immediately after the restart. Within two minutes, Sao Paolo had regained the lead as Amoroso converted a Cicinho cross from close range. Once again the momentum had shifted and Sao Paolo regained their lost confidence. In the 50th minute, Ceni came forward to take one of his trademark free-kicks, b ut his good effort just cleared the bar. Seven minutes later, Ceni strolled forward again, this time to take a penalty cl everly won by Amoroso. His well struck penalty beat Zaid who nearly got a hand t o it. It was now 3-1 to Sao Paolo and the Brazilian club’s supporters were in f ull voice at the National Stadium. Sao Paolo were back to their possession game and it looked as though the Copa Li bertadores winners would waltz through the last half hour. It wasn’t to be howe ver as Anghel Iordanescu’s men clawed their way back into the match once again. In the 68th minute, a corner by Tcheco was flicked on into the path of Asian Pl ayer of the Year Hamad Al Montashari whose header gave Ceni no chance and Al Itt ihad grabbed a lifeline. Kallon won a free-kick just outside the box in the 71st minute, but Tcheco’s po or shot never threatened Ceni. The chances were coming and going now and Sao Paolo should have made it 4-2 soon after, but Aloisio guided his free header wide. Aloisio was guilty of more wayw ard finishing just seconds later after picking up a loose ball in the area. Though there was a quarter of an hour left, Al Ittihad had run out of ideas and Sao Paolo held on rather comfortably as Kallon and Noor were unable to create an y major chances. So, the Saudis will now take part in the 3rd Place match on Sun day, but can be very happy with their performance in this tournament where they have turned many heads. Sao Paolo meanwhile must improve on this performance if they plan to come through victorious in Sunday’s final.
