Match report
Roma roar into Round of 32
AS Roma cruised into the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup with a 3-1 win against
FC Basel 1893 at the Stadio Olimpico, but the Swiss side also qualified after la
te drama in Strasbourg in the other Group E match.
Basel blow
Goals from Rodrigo Taddei, Fransceso Totti and Chabana Nonda assured Roma of sec
ond place in Group E behind RC Strasbourg. The French side came to Basel's rescu
e with an equaliser in added time against FK Crvena Zvezda, which means Basel ta
ke the third qualifying place in the group with six points, two more than the Be
lgrade side.
Taddei opener
Basel coach Christian Gross spoke of the need to avoid early mistakes but his ch
arges had not been listening. After 12 minutes the Basel defence failed to cut o
ut a long free-kick, allowing the ball to reach Rodrigo Taddei and the Brazilian
struck a fierce half-volley past the unsighted Pascal Zuberbuhler. The goal bro
ught the match to life and Roma came close to a second after 18 minutes when Tot
ti's firmly struck free-kick was tipped over. Four minutes later the talismanic
captain played a perfect reverse pass to Taddei but Zuberbuhler was out quickly
to smother at his feet.
Woodwork intervenes
Basel, who had looked the livelier side early on, then reasserted themselves and
were denied by the woodwork twice in as many minutes. Firstly, Ivan Ergic saw h
is header tipped on to the underside of the bar and then Matias Delgado's sweetl
y-struck shot crashed back off the post with Gianluca Curci well beaten. Roma re
grouped and, despite losing Christian Panucci through injury, they doubled their
lead just before half-time as Totti raced on to Alberto Aquilani's pinpoint pas
s and coolly placed the ball under Zuberbuhler.
Win secured
With Crvena Zvezda leading at half-time, Basel knew they would probably need to
win to advance but their remote hopes of an away success were shattered four min
utes after the restart. Basel were again undone defending high up the pitch as T
addei's toe-poke sent Nonda clear and the former AS Monaco FC striker beat Zuber
buhler with a low shot into the bottom corner.
Late consolation
Basel refused to capitulate and almost replied immediately but the luckless Delg
ado pulled his shot just wide of the far post. The visitors did pull a goal back
12 minutes from time, Julio Rossi and David Degen combining to set up Mladen Pe
tric for a close-range finish. But Strasbourg's Kevin Gameiro was Basel's real h
ero with his 94th-minute equaliser against Crvena Zvezda, ensuring that the Swis
s side join Roma and compatriots FC Thun in Friday's draw.
