Japan beats Malaysia, advances to quarterfinals in AFC Youth Championship Monday, 27/09/04 The Japan Under-19 team secured a place in the quarterfinals劯f the AFC Youth Championship after beating Malaysia 3-0 on September 27 at Stadium Larkin in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Japan, seeking a berth to next year's World Youth Championship, improved its points tally to six from two wins in Group A. Malaysia and Nepal follow with three points, while Vietnam remains winless. A minute into the first half, Cerezo Osaka midfielder Takuya Kokeguchi opened the scoring by blasting home a Sota Hirayama pass from 6 meters outside the box. Midfielder Yojiro Takahagi of Sanfrecce Hirosihma widened Japan's lead to 2-0 with a volley in the 43rd minute. Substitute forward Takayuki Morimoto of Tokyo Verdy 1969, the youngest player on the team at 16, found the net in the 69th minute off a cross from Hokuto Nakamura of Avispa Fukuoka. "Our players are taking it a game at a time. It is important to see if they can keep that attitude to go the rest of the way," Japan Under-19 team coach Kiyoshi Okuma commented. Japan will play Vietnam on September 29 at the same venue. The top four finishers of the tournament will qualify for the World Youth Championship next June in the Netherlands.
