Zico upbeat despite defeat by Mark Buckingham - created on 22 May 2005 ----------------------------------------------- Zico refused to press the panic button after Japan lost 1-0 to Peru in the Kirin Cup. An injury time goal from Gustavo Enrique Vassallo settled the match in Niigata, handing Peru's new coach Freddy Ternero a win on his debut. Japan had dominated the encounter for sustained periods but were unable to break down their stubborn opponents. Ahead of next month's 2006 World Cup qualifiers against Bahrain and North Korea, the defeat is a setback to Zico's plans but the Japan coach was not being downbeat after the loss. "We didn't take our chances and they caught us on the break," said Zico. "There's no need to panic and make lots of changes. We just need to be more clinical in front of goal." Peru boss Ternero was buoyed by the result on his baptism, particularly given the limited amount of preparation time. Ternero commented: "We have only been together for three days and Japan did dictate for long periods but we showed discipline and battled hard for the result." The next game in the Kirin Cup pits Peru against United Arab Emirates on Tuesday before Japan play against their Asian rivals on Friday. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 218.169.11.229
