Fallen 'Angel'
The WB stakes "Angel." Plus, Matt LeBlanc is a daddy!

For those "Buffy" fans still in mourning over the show's demise last year
(and we're right there with ya), we have more bad news. "Angel," the
supernatural spinoff series starring David Boreanaz as the titular brooding
vampire with a soul, has been dusted by the WB.
The network's decision is a shocker since the demon-packed show, which
recently celebrated its 100th episode, is having a very strong fifth
season creatively and is solid in the ratings (well, WB ratings, anyway).
Joss Whedon, the creator of both "Buffy" and "Angel," admits to Variety
he's "heartbroken" over the cancellation. "I thought that if a show was
really good and doing really well, it was renewed," he tells to the trade.
"I was apparently misinformed."
Whedon, who says the cast and crew were "stunned" by the news (we feel
your pain, guys), understands the WB's business rational for lowering
the ax, "But to me, when they're scrambling to hold on to their audience,
their revenue, their dignity, it doesn't seem the best decision. And it's
certainly not the classiest. If there's no place for quality in the
equation, I don't know why we're here."
In a statement, the WB said, "Like some of the great series that are
leaving the air this year, including 'Frasier' and 'Friends,' the cast,
crew, writers and producers of 'Angel' deserve to be able to wrap up
the series in a way befitting a classic television series," adding,
"We have discussed continuing the 'Angel' legacy with special movie
events next year, which is still on the table." No word on whether
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who has been resistant to a post-"Buffy" guest-
starring gig, will cave in and reprise her role as the Slayer (and
Angel's erstwhile sweetie) for the series finale.
If you're still craving some bloodsucking in your primetime lineup,
keep an eye out for "ER" producer John Wells' upcoming revival of the
vampire drama "Dark Shadows," which not-so-coincidentally will air on
the WB. "I don't think the two shows will be competing against one
another," WB head Jordan Levin rightly predicted last month.
Grrrr. Aaargh.
