The former Magic guard returns to Orlando tonight as the first-year coach of
the Sacramento Kings.

    前魔術後衛如今以國王新教頭身份重返奧蘭多。

After one season of his signature smile, mustache, baby 'fro and physical
scoring presence, the Orlando Magic muscled out their first real star in 1990
to make room for a young Nick Anderson.

Former Magic General Manager Pat Williams assumed the guy he traded to the
New Jersey Nets for two second-round draft picks would spend the rest of his
life strolling the Sunset Strip instead of NBA sidelines.

    前魔術GM Pat Williams 以為被他交易出去的這傢伙可能會進入好萊塢，而不是留在

"He was strikingly handsome, movie handsome," said Williams, now the Magic's
senior vice president. "I don't think anybody saw him as a coach. We sure saw
a future in Hollywood or modeling."

Theus will make his first return to Amway Arena today modeling a designer
suit as an up-and-coming NBA coach. In his first season, Theus has coached an
injury-riddled Sacramento Kings team to a respectable 26-28 record entering
tonight's game against the Magic.

    Theus 將會在他重返Amway Arena 的這天穿上帥氣的西裝。本季，Theus 帶著傷痛不
斷的國王隊取得了值得驕傲的戰績，在對陣魔術前，國王是26勝28敗。

Perhaps it's ironic that Theus' longest-tenured coaching job came playing the
role of Bill Fuller for four seasons on the NBC sitcom Hang Time.

竟然真的成為教頭啦！

That guest spot on the show Viper didn't pan out, but there was that one time
Rick Pitino took a chance on Theus as a Louisville assistant for two seasons.

That commentator job for the now-defunct Slamball fizzled, but he revived a
struggling New Mexico State program in two seasons as head coach there.

Florida Coach Billy Donovan and Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy cleared the NBA
path for Theus, who took New Mexico State from six wins in 2005 to the NCAA
Tournament in 2007.

    也要多虧佛羅里達大學的Billy Donovan 和現魔術的Stan Van Gundy沒接下這份工作
。成功帶領新墨西哥州大大變身的Theus 才能脫穎而出。

Van Gundy would be in Sacramento right now if it weren't for Donovan's cold
feet with the Magic job. When Donovan backed out of the deal, Van Gundy came
to Orlando instead of accepting an offer from the Kings.

"I thanked both of them for that," Theus said. "I sent a message to Billy

Theus' NBA pedigree of more than 19,000 career points and 6,000 career
assists helped his chances with the Kings. But his quick coaching ascension
in five years in the business has Theus hoping to become one of the NBA's
elite coaches.

    在他的職業生涯，Theus 得了超過19000 分，另外還有6000次助攻，這些生涯成績是

"I know when I was playing [in Orlando] I wasn't thinking about being a
coach," Theus said. "But I learned I like fighting the fight. This is what
I'm supposed to be doing. I've got a lot to learn, but I wish to become one
of the great NBA coaches."

Drawing from his experiences with the Magic has helped Theus as Kings coach,
he said. The idea of another season or two in Orlando sounded appealing to
Theus, then 32, who averaged 18.9 points per game as a marketable face of the
first-year franchise.

    在魔術的經驗對他的國王教頭工作很有幫助。其實當年32歲的Theus 很希望在那邊多
留一兩季，要知道他那一季可是隊上的得分王（平均18.9分）。

Theus said he was traded without warning. Noting the uneasiness he felt after
the trade, Theus said he has vowed to be up-front with his players.

    Theus 說當年他是無預警下被賣。在被交易之後他覺得心中無限委屈，所以他支持球
員多多表達心中的想法。

"I really liked it there," said Theus, who played one season with New Jersey
before retiring. "We could have built a home there and stayed in Orlando."

    「我很喜歡奧蘭多，我好希望能在那邊有個家，並且留在那裡。」接下來在籃網打了
一季就退休的Theus 說。

Williams said he figured Theus wanted to stay in Orlando, but he didn't want
another player looking over the shoulder of Anderson, Orlando's first draft
pick.

    Williams說他知道Theus 很想留下來，但他不希望有人擋到Anderson的成長之路，畢
竟Anderson可是奧蘭多的首位選秀球員。

"It was a good move to draft him, and it was a good move to trade him,"
Williams said. "He gave us one important year to get our team established. He
gave us excitement and great memories. He gave us flash and dash."

    「選到他很榮幸，但這麼帥讓我很嫉妒，所以交易是必然的。他在隊上的一年幫助我
們建立了球隊的基礎，留下了很多美好的回憶。」Williams說。

Now he's giving a dose of solid coaching, according to some of his peers. Van
Gundy said in January that Theus could be a coach-of-the-year candidate
because of how the Kings have played hard through injuries, most notably to
Mike Bibby (now an Atlanta Hawk), Kevin Martin and Ron Artest.

    現在Theus 已經在執教上展現了他的才能。大范在一月時說Theus 應該有機會爭取年

The formula for Theus' coaching starts with simple observations that evolve
into his own blueprint, he said. He admires many styles -- Gregg Popovich's
confidence, Phil Jackson's philosophical approach, Jerry Sloan's "realness,"
Pitino's game-planning.

    Theus 的執教風格是透過觀察來逐漸開始自已的計劃。他也很欽佩多位前輩的優點，
比方說波波維奇的自信，史龍教皇的牽引機哲學，Pitino的比賽策劃，另外像禪師睡著睡
著就能贏球也不錯。

His own signature moves include an accountability tool he calls "put your
name on it" and purposefully hiring a tall assistant coaching staff so
everyone sees eye to eye when they talk.

There's a way to call out players without embarrassing them, Theus said.

    在把球員叫到身旁時，Theus 也會試著不讓他們感到難堪。

"When I played, the coach ruled the roost," Theus said. "I remember that as a
player, the best coaches were really tough. Certainly some things have
changed. I'd say guys are more sensitive because they have so many people
around them and so many people involved in their lives. Trust takes time. I
guess it all comes down to being real with guys."

    「當我還是球員時，教練就是皇帝，最好的教頭往往都是最嚴厲的那群。可是現在情
況已經不同了。現在的小伙子都是草莓族，喔！我是說他們比較敏感啦，因為有太多人會
與他們接觸，所以要取得人與人之間的信任就會花上比較多時間。我相信在我的一片誠心
下，他們都會被我打動。」Theus說。

Magic General Manager Otis Smith, who played with Theus on that inaugural
team, said Theus had coaching instincts as a player.

    魔術現任GM Otis Smith曾經和Theus 一起打過球，他說身為教頭或球員的Theus 都
很不錯。

Except that one time Theus recommended the two switch defensive assignments
so Smith would guard Michael Jordan. Theus instructed him to force Jordan
into jumpers. Jordan finished with 52 that night, Smith said.

    但有一次對上公牛時，Theus 建議兩人交換防守的對象。Smith 因此對上了Jordan，
賽前Theus 告訴Smith ，你就讓他跳投，不要讓他切入。Jordan因此只得到五十二分。

Thanks a lot, coach.

    教練，您真內行！

Eighteen years later, Theus is still making Smith squirm a little. The Kings
beat the Magic 104-100 in January.

    十八年後，Theus 又帶著國王耍了Smith 一次。國王在一月以104比100擊敗了魔術。

"[Theus' hiring] caught everyone off guard I think," Smith said. "But he's
fresh blood who knows our game and has been around the game."

    「會請Theus 執教是大家都沒想到的事，但我想這位新教頭知道怎麼帶他的球員來打
比賽。」Smith說。

Perhaps that's what's fashionable these days.

    所以Theus 還是很夯。
