Before the Kings hosted Houston on Thursday, a routine shootaround was more
like a short-a-round.

While the average NBA player prefers these morning sessions stay relatively
brief, this wasn't a perk given for good behavior. This was Kings coach
Reggie Theus fed up with his team for its "lackadaisical" ways, then abruptly
ending practice and leaving the players to figure out what it meant.

1-6 (now 1-7) and everything to do with the overall approach "in the last
week or so." He said it was the first time he had cut short a shootaround to
send a message since his job began last season.

"If you don't do things a certain way (in the exhibition season), it can be a

The tactic seemed to work. The Kings played well enough to be tied with the
Rockets 80-80 entering the fourth quarter before fading.

"You can't wait until the season starts," said Theus, who gave the team
Friday off.

Theus knows the reality facing the Kings with the regular season starting
Wednesday in Minnesota. They have very little room for error, and even less
so considering the expected absences at the beginning of a four-game trip
that goes through Miami, Orlando and Philadelphia. They are expected to be
without García and center Brad Miller (five-game league suspension). Guard
Quincy Douby (sprained right ankle) and point guard Beno Udrih (strained left
hip flexor) are expected back.

García still hopes to join his teammates at the outset. He said he isn't yet

tendencies of last season didn't start well, as the Kings averaged 17.4 in
the eight exhibition games, and the uphill rebounding battle generally
continued. And for all the focus on offensive style and tempo in training
camp and the exhibition season, the Kings' lack of defense quickly has become
the top priority.

"Everybody has to figure out our roles, especially defensively," García
said. "We've got to keep improving defensively. Teams are scoring 100, 110
points every game, so I think that's the most important thing."

my job to shake the rug a little bit."
