Over the weekend, along with the excitement of the 2009 NBA Playoffs, the NFL
held its draft. Two days and seven rounds later, 256 players were selected.
When the NBA Draft takes place on June 25, 60 players will be chosen in one
night, and according to Kings Director of Player Personnel Jerry Reynolds,
the players selected will be the best available prospects.

Since the Kings last had a top five pick (third overall) in 1991, how much
have prospect evaluations evolved?
Q:上一次國王有前五順位是91年，到目前為止已經評估多少球員了？

“Teams work out players a lot more than they used to years ago. Now every
team brings players in to work them out. You get their psychological
profiles. You do a lot better background work, mainly because you’re staffed
so much better. Most NBA teams probably have double, if not triple, the staff
they had 20 years ago. So they have a lot more information and are a lot
better prepared, or should be, to make their pick, trade or do whatever they
need to do.”
J:「球隊比往年測試多很多球員，現在每隻球隊都會去測試球員，會得到他們的心理報告

How much stock should Kings fans put into Web site mock drafts or pundit
prognostications?
Q:球迷要相信那些預測選秀網站或專家嗎？

“As you get into the Draft, a lot of things change. So the basic thinking of
what Draft Web sites and media experts predict, you find out they really don’
t have a clue with their mock drafts.
「選秀瞬息萬變，所以關於那些網站和專家預測的基本思想，你會發現他們根本沒有辦法
從那些預測得到些什麼。」

“Some guys the media think are a top five pick may end up a 35th pick, like
a DeAndre Jordan last year. Or the opposite holds true, like a Jason
Thompson, who some people thought should have been a 25th pick and the Kings
took him 12th. Well, we knew he was a good pick there and we knew if we wouldn
’t have taken him another team would have taken him shortly after us.
「有些媒體認為一個原本有前五順位的有可能會最後落在35，像去年的Jordan。也有反過
來的，像小湯，原本大家都認為他是25順位，而國王在12順位就選了他。我們知道這是個

“The NBA knows. Mistakes are still made, for sure, because it’s not a
science. But there’s a lot more information available and teams are not
concerned where some draft experts have certain guys. Teams make their own
decisions. For instance, I’ve seen on some of these mock drafts, players
they list at 25 or so, we’d have them at six or seven, just on talent.”
「NBA也知道。錯誤一直層出不窮，真的，因為這不是科學。但有很多資訊可以參考，而且
球隊根本不在乎什麼狗屁專家。球隊會自己做決定。舉例來說，我有看過一些測預網站，

How much do team’s prospect rankings change from now until the Draft?
Q:球隊的選秀排名從現在一直到選秀會會有多大的變化？

“As you get into it, from May 1 to June 1, boy, it changes a lot and by
middle-to-late June, it changes again. Certainly, the NBA has made a lot of
mistakes and will continue to, but, as I’ve said many times, I think of all
the professional sports, the NBA does it the best.”
「如你所知的，從5月1日到6月1日會變很多，在六月中到六月底又會再變。確實，NBA犯了

What separates the NBA Draft from NFL and MLB Drafts?
Q:NBA選秀和NFL與MLB有什麼分別？

“There are very few guys who aren’t first or second round picks who end up
being quality players as opposed to the other two sports. In baseball, where
an Albert Pujols, who may be the best player in the League, was a 13th or
15th round pick. Or in the NFL, you see great quarterbacks who are sixth
round picks, like a Tom Brady, or free agents.
「相對於另外二個運動，會有一些人沒有在前兩輪被選到，但最後成為一個夠格的球員的
機會是比較小的。像棒球的撲吼獅，也許是聯盟最棒的選手，是第13或15輪被選到。或者
NFL，偉大的四分衛是第六輪被選到，像Tom Brady。」

“Those things just don’t happen in the NBA, and I think it’s a credit to
the drafting. Should somebody in the NBA be taken 15th rather than 23rd or
something? Sure. Or somebody who should’ve been taken fifth was taken 19th?
Sure, those things happen. But when you really look at the big picture, there
’s not much difference, and that’s the way it’ll play out again.”
