The last page of Paul Westphal's NBA head-coaching book came at Arco Arena,
the very place where he now hopes to add to the story.

Two days before his Nov. 27, 2000, firing in Seattle, his SuperSonics had
suffered a 125-101 rout by the Kings. Chris Webber had dominated Sonics forward
Vin Baker on the floor, then dissed him off of it, engaging in a 30-second
confrontation in the tunnel afterward and unleashing a one-way war of words
in the media. Baker, whose emotional ways and struggles with depression were
no secret by that point, cried on his way out of the building.

to recurring battles with the point guard's good friend, Baker. Westphal had

Yet when Westphal interviewed for the Kings' head-coaching position with co-
owners Joe and Gavin Maloof and basketball president Geoff Petrie on Wednesday
in Las Vegas, those weren't the stories he wanted to share. He focused on his
tales from Phoenix, on how he helped the foundering and fractured Suns rise
again more than 20 years earlier and how he could help a Kings team facing
daunting challenges of its own.

The year before the offensive-minded Westphal arrived – with his tenure
including four seasons as an assistant under Cotton Fitzsimmons and three-
plus seasons as the head coach and an average of 56.2 wins in the seven-
season span – three Suns were part of a 13-man indictment on drug-related
charges. While no defendants went to trial, the scandal was a new low for an
organization that had gone five seasons without a winning record.

Soon thereafter, general manager Jerry Colangelo put together a group to buy
the team, and the dramatic turnaround began. And while the 1987 trade for
then-point guard and now-Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson was instrumental,
Johnson said Westphal was just as key and predicted more success than strife
if he wins the Kings' job.

"We did great things under Cotton Fitzsimmons, but once Paul became the head
coach, we were able to ramp it up to another level," Johnson said Thursday.

"Secondly, Paul is a very good coach for young people. If young kids are hard
working and motivated, they will thrive under Paul. He's a very good teacher
of the game. I think what happened in Seattle, that was just the wrong fit for
that personnel and the organization at the time."

Another Kings candidate, Eddie Jordan, is set to interview in Philadelphia
today and reportedly prefers the 76ers.

Westphal's platform, quite clearly, included drawing parallels between his
Suns experience and the current Kings.

"(The Suns) had … to rebuild the credibility of the franchise in Phoenix,
(and) to be part of that, along with Cotton Fitzsimmons and Jerry Colangelo,
was really good experience," Westphal, 58, told The Bee. "The Kings are a lot
better off than the Suns were at that time. They're not rocked by a drug
scandal, but there is a lot of rebuilding that has to be done, and I have been
part of that before, and it worked out pretty well."

After the Seattle firing, Westphal coached at Pepperdine for five seasons before
returning to the NBA in 2007 as a Dallas assistant. When Rick Carlisle replaced
Avery Johnson last summer, Westphal became the Mavericks' executive vice
president of basketball operations.
"I think he would be great for the Kings," Mavs owner Mark Cuban wrote via
e-mail. "I love Westie. (He's a) great basketball mind."
