Westphal’s Strength is His Staff

WESTPHAL 選定他的團隊!

During his first Media Day as head coach of the Sacramento Kings, Paul
Westphal provided numerous sound bites and smiled pleasantly for TV cameras.
He offered plenty of insight during lengthy reporter interviews, answered
questions online from inquiring Kings fans on Facebook and even joked about
his relationship with the Sacramento mayor, who just happens to be Kevin
Johnson, a player he previously coached.

If Westphal handles the coaching duties the way he skillfully conducted
himself at the annual media session on Sept. 28, the Sacramento Kings won’t
be auditioning another head coach for many years.

The casually dressed Westphal looked at home in the Kings practice facility,
which officially became his basketball laboratory a day later with the
arrival of training camp. Every conceivable question was seemingly asked of
Westphal, who is determined to put last year’s injury-riddled, 17-win season
in the rearview mirror of this proud NBA franchise.

267-159 record as an NBA head coach. “There are a lot of reasons to be
optimistic coming into this season. We’re going to be an enthusiastic,
hard-working team. I think it’s going to be a fun ride this season. I really
like this team.”

He also likes the hand-picked coaching staff that’s responsible for shaping
this youthful group into a winning team. Westphal will combine the wisdom of
veterans like Pete Carril and newcomer Jim Eyen, with a younger core of
coaches who include Mario Elie, Leonard “Truck” Robinson, Bryan Gates and
former Kings player and holdover assistant Shareef Abdur-Rahim.

The coaches will have specific roles determined by Westphal, who is anxious
to learn the habits of his players, yet already knows the coaches personally
or by reputation.

“I’ve always had a really strong staff wherever I’ve coached,” said
Westphal, who had three 55-plus win seasons with the Phoenix Suns. “When I
took this job, I saw who was the best available fit in each slot and was
fortunate enough to hire them. Everyone has been assigned roles, but the nuts
and bolts will take some time for us to get used to. I expect this coaching
staff to get along well right away.”

Judging from his NBA background, Westphal knows plenty about winning. He was
a standout NBA player for 12 seasons and won a Championship with the Boston
Celtics. Later as a star player with the Suns, the flashy Westphal helped
Phoenix reach the NBA Finals in 1976. Nineteen years later, Westphal was on
the sidelines, coaching the Suns to a franchise-record 62 wins and another
trip to the Finals where they lost to the Michael Jordan-led Bulls.

the NBA as both a coach and player,” Kings President of Basketball
Operations Geoff Petrie said. “Everyone will find him to be genuine,
discerning and very committed and excited about taking control of the team. We
’re all looking forward to working together to get the team up off the mat
and growing, developing and improving.”

 JIM EYEN 

When an opposing team calls out an offensive play or defensive set this
season against the Kings, don’t be surprised if Westphal quickly turns to
Eyen for an explanation. Why? Because the veteran assistant coach will most
likely have a quick answer.

當大家要洞察敵情時?  會想到找誰?  沒錯  賓果!  這就是EYEN的任務!

“His knowledge of the NBA is unsurpassed,” Westphal said of his lead
assistant. “Jim is one of the most well-respected, long-time assistants in
the League. He has been highly regarded by everyone I’ve talked to and we
are very fortunate. Adding him to our staff was really an easy decision to
make.”

Eyen may be a recognizable face to many Kings fans. He has been an NBA
assistant for 18 years, most of them at the side of Mike Dunleavy, who valued
Eyen’s opinions so much he was among Dunleavy’s staff during head coaching
jobs with the Lakers, Bucks, Trail Blazers and Clippers.

One of Eyen’s primary roles with the team will be defense. The Kings were
among the poorest defensive teams statistically last season, a facet Westphal
vows to change. The improvement will be part of Eyen’s role throughout the
season, his 31st as a basketball coach.

他還有一項主管的就是防守  這是WESTPHAL宣示要改進國王全聯盟最差防守的一步

Eyen的經驗到底多豐富哩  國王是他這第31次教練任內要改善防守的球隊

“Defense is extremely important if you want to be a legitimate team in this
league,” Westphal said. “You’ve got to be respectable defensively and that
’s what we’ll be shooting for this season.”

MARIO ELIE 

Toughness was a word frequently used to describe Elie during his 12-year
career that included major roles with two championship teams in Houston and
another in San Antonio. He played a physical game at both ends of the court
and his workload included guarding some of the NBA’s elite stars like Larry
Bird, Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.

“I loved playing defense,” Elie recalled. “I was matched up against some
of the greatest players ever and I wanted to take the challenge. I always
knew whom I was guarding and took pride in wanting to stop them. I want to
instill a little swagger in our guys and have them ready to accept challenges.

Elie endured a difficult road to the NBA. Drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks as
the 160th pick in 1985 out of American International College – a Division II
school in Springfield, Mass. – he played overseas and in three NBA-feeder
leagues before finally becoming a fixture in the League with Golden State,
after originally signing a 10-day contract in 1991.

他有著不順利的NBA生涯 被公鹿160順位選到  在海外流浪了很多年

最後終於在勇士有立足之地 在這之前都都是領10天派遣合約

Defense, hard work and the ability to knock down 3-point shots were
ingredients that allowed Elie to begin his NBA career at 27.

三分跟防守是他能在NBA吃飯的傢伙

“In this league, you have to find your niche and fortunately I was able to
find mine,” said Elie, who averaged 16.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.3
assists while helping Houston win its second straight NBA title in 1995.

That same dedication and hard work has served him well as a coach. Elie has
worked five seasons as an assistant, including the last two in Dallas with
Westphal, who was an assistant in 2007-08, before taking on his role as Vice
President of Basketball Operations. Elie’s main assignment on the staff will
be working with the perimeter players.

“Mario has great respect in the NBA, first as a player and now as a coach,”
 Westphal said. “I was very impressed with him in Dallas. He was one of the
first guys I targeted. He’s going to really help us with his defensive
intensity and with his experience as a successful and versatile perimeter
player in this league. The respect he has earned as a tough competitor will
bring a lot to our staff.”

 LEONARD “TRUCK” ROBINSON 

During his 11 NBA seasons, his nickname was “Truck.” As the moniker
indicates, he did plenty of heavy lifting as an undersized power forward with
a great knack for securing rebounds during stops in Washington, Atlanta, New
Orleans, New York and Phoenix. On the latter two teams he was Westphal’s
teammate.

接下來介紹的教練 他的11年NBA生涯外號叫做  "卡車"

不管他在哪一隊  他的專長就是以一個undersized PF的身分

去抓下每一個難抓的籃板 在他生涯最後待的兩個球隊Westphal還是他的隊友



A two-time All-Star, Robinson was an unstoppable force in 1977-78 with the
Jazz, averaging 22.7 points and 15.7 rebounds per game. The rebounds came
from a physical 6-foot-7 forward who possessed the strength of a power
forward along with the mobility of a small forward.

他入選過兩屆全明星 77-78年  他平均得 22.7pt  15.7reb

而且他只有6-7  (!)

他動起來就跟SF一樣快 活動籃板魔人

It required little contemplation from Westphal when considering what role
Robinson would play on the coaching staff – rebounding.

 Westphal找他來的意圖再明顯不過了 " 籃板!!"

“Truck is one of the smartest, most accomplished players I’ve ever played
with,” Westphal said. “He led the League in rebounding once as a 6-foot-7
forward. Even though he’s never coached in the League, he’s been a
specialist in working with big men. Our rebounding will improve and one of
the reasons will be because Truck’s on the staff.”

The role as bigs mentor suits Robinson well.

“Paul and I did a lot of things when we played together as a big forward and
shooting guard that we’ll be trying to instill in Tyreke (Evans) and JT
(Jason Thompson),” Robinson said. “We’re a young team and a lot of young
players don’t know what they can and can’t get away with as bigs. I’ll be
giving them tips on how to get the job done and make it easier for them.”

 Bryan Gates 

It’s clearly understood Gates will savor the first-class travel and many
other perks that come with being part of the NBA. That’s to be expected from
a man who once coached the Hickory Nutz, an obscure United States Basketball
League team that played its home games in a North Carolina high school gym.

這是Bryan Gates第一次NBA助教的處女秀

“I walked in today and thought, ‘Wow, I’m actually here,’” said Gates,
clearly savoring Media Day more than any other assistant. “It’s no
different than a Wells Fargo president walking into his office for the first
time and realizing this is a very special day.”

Gates might be an anonymous name and face for awhile in Sacramento, but he’s
a familiar figure in Boise, Idaho where he held various roles with the Idaho
Stampede since 1997. He spent the past three seasons as the head coach for
Idaho where he compiled a 101-51 record, including the 2007-08 NBA D-League
Championship and back-to-back Coach of the Year honors.

也許他不被國王迷所熟知

但是在發展聯盟他可是個大人物  帶領著Idaho這支球隊打出 101W-51L的戰績

而且贏過總冠軍  而且得過兩次年度教練

Gates has a resume that includes stops with the IBA’s Rapid City Thrillers,
USBL’s Oklahoma Storm and Beirut Blue Stars in Lebanon. Duties were numerous
in the minor leagues. Westphal will utilize Gates as a “gap filler,”
 meaning he will do a little bit of everything. During games he will
primarily chart the offense.

他在次級聯盟的經驗很豐富  WESTPHAL給他的工作是什麼都管一點

“He’s had great success everywhere he’s been,” Westphal said. “Bryan has
paid his dues and then some. He was ready for this shot. He’s really been
looking for a chance to take a step into the NBA and we’re thrilled to
provide that opportunity. I think he’s going to add a lot to our staff.”
