Who is Pervis Ellison?  A lot of people don’t know the name.  Would you
believe he was the number one overall pick in the 1989 NBA Draft?  Seriously.
 Ellison averaged an incredibly-mediocre 9.5 points per game for his NBA
career after being a top pick.

這位1989年選秀狀元。Ellison 是個生涯留下難堪的平均 9.5分的狀元。

The 1989 Draft was weak, but in retrospect, the Sacramento Kings could have
made a better selection with that top pick.  They missed out on Glen Rice,
Sean Elliott, Tim Hardawawy and Shawn Kemp.  However, Danny Ferry went with
the 2nd pick.  So, yeah, the 1989 NBA Draft’s top two picks were Pervis
Ellison and Danny Ferry.  The NBA, it’s FANNNNtastic!

    1989選秀會實力並不堅強，但國王可以拿他們的狀元簽找到更好的人選。他們錯過了
Glen Rice 、Sean Elliott、Tim Hardaway以及Shawn Kemp。不過國王也不必太傷心，因
為第二順位被選中的是Danny Ferry 。是的，1989選秀會前兩順位就是這麼歡樂。

Back to Pervis.  Ellison was a darn good college basketball player at
Louisville.  He was a freshman on the Louisville team that won the National
Title in 1986 and was named the tournament’s most outstanding player.  This
was all as a freshman.  In many ways it was all downhill from there.  As a
four-year starter at Louisville, Never Nervous Pervis averaged 15-8.  While
in college he played 139 games, one of the top totals in NCAA history.

    回頭來看Pervis，他在大學時簡直是雄霸天下。新人年就帶領球隊拿到NCAA冠軍，自
已也捧走了MOP 。對一個大一新人來說，沒有什麼更好的事情了，所以接下來就是不斷的
下坡路。四年的路易維爾生涯裡，Never Nervous Pervis平均是十五分八籃板，他總共打
了139 場比賽，名列NCAA史上前茅。

When he arrived in the NBA the problems began to pile up.  During his rookie
season with the Kings, Ellison suffered through injuries and questionable
play.  During his rookie season, Mr. Number One average a modest 8-6 in just
34 games.  Apparently the Kings knew what they had and traded Ellison to the
Bullets once the season was done.  In return they received two white stiffs
(Bob Hansen and Eric Leckner, 2 second round picks (amounting to nothing),
and the 23rd pick of the first round (Anthony Bonner).  So, they essentially
got nothing.  Way to go Pervis.

The following season, Ellison showed some heart.  He averaged 11 a game,
primarily off the bench.  The next season, his third, Pervis won the Most
Improved Player award as he poured in 20-11 a game for the 25-57 Bullets.
 The following year, Ellison again struggled with injuries while averaging 17
a game.  After that Ellison never again appeared in more that 70 games in a
single season.  He was released a few times in the following years and was
out of the NBA by the time he was 33.

    不過接下來的球季，Ellison 好像下了決心。他每場可以由板凳出發攻下十一分。在
他的第三個球季，他以二十分十一籃板的成績拿到了最佳進步獎。隔年，平均十七分的他

Ellison entered the league as a 6’9” 205 pound center.  However, later in
his career with the Celtics and the Sonics, he was clearly much bigger, grew
out some dreds, and looked tired all of the time.

    Ellison 進入聯盟時是六呎九吋，兩百零五磅的中鋒。不過在他替賽爾提克及超音速
效力時，他看來更大隻了。

Ellison ended up making over $20M as a pro athlete and currently coaches
various basketball teams in Southern New Jersey.

雖然Ellison被認為是NBA選秀史上最差的狀元之一，但他其實真沒有那麼差。

1986年，Louisville大學奪冠的時候，他是MOP，當時他才大一。大一就拿MOP的意義就是
，他有超成熟的心智跟技術。如果是今天，他大一就可以跳入NBA了，但他還是待滿了四
年。1989年，他是選秀狀元，被國王隊選中。但他一直是有傷的，也沒有治理好。就我所
知，他的傷是膝傷，而這對一個禁區球員來說，是最致命的。

我個人是認為，倘若他沒有傷，他有可能會是個明星球員，至少也會是不錯的禁區球員。
他的天份擺在那裡，但很可惜的是，他太晚進NBA。

Ellison was nicknamed "Never Nervous Pervis" for his play with the University
of Louisville. At 6 ft 9 in and 242 lb, he started all four years as the
center under coach Denny Crum. In his freshman year he led Louisville to its
second national championship and was named the Most Outstanding Player—the
second time a freshman had ever been awarded that honor, after Arnie Ferrin
in 1944 for Utah. Since then, Carmelo Anthony has also achieved the honor,
winning it as a forward with the Syracuse Orangemen in 2003.

Assorted injuries plagued his career, including two knee problems that kept
him benched for 29 games in 1992–1993 and 30 games in 1993–1994. As a free
agent, Ellison signed with the Boston Celtics in 1994 but did not play until
midway through the season because he was still rehabilitating from knee
problems. A broken toe suffered while moving furniture kept him out of most
games between 1996 and 1998. After participating in 69 out of a possible 246
games over the final three seasons with the Celtics, he joined the Seattle
SuperSonics in 2000 but retired after playing nine games. He now coaches
basketball for various teams throughout Southern New Jersey. He lives in
Voorhees, New Jersey with his wife Timi and 3 children, Seattle, Aja and
Malik.
