With NBA free agency beginning today, Isiah Thomas still has tuneup work to
do on his overloaded Knicks roster following Thursday's feast.

After acquiring five players on draft night, including power forward Zach
Randolph, Thomas has 17 bodies, with lots of options and motivation to
shuffle some pieces.

"Any chance we have to upgrade our roster and make it of championship
quality, that's what we intend to do," Thomas said. "My goal is to put
together a championship team and to coach in a championship game."

Thomas' acquisition of Randolph is expected to be his major offseason catch.
Though Thomas will contact Rashard Lewis' reps today, the Knicks no longer
consider the Seattle guard a major free-agent priority.

Thomas has told confidants that guards Dan Dickau and Fred Jones, acquired
from Portland along with Randolph in exchange for Channing Frye and Steve
Francis, have not been ruled out for the final 15-man roster. They will
attend tomorrow's press conference with Randolph and draftees Wilson Chandler
of DePaul and Syracuse second-rounder Demetris Nichols, whom the Knicks
obtained in a midnight trade with the Blazers.

Jones, an athletic guard, played 63 games for Portland last season, averaging
20.9 minutes and 6.5 points. Thomas encouraged Pacers GM Donnie Walsh to
draft Jones in 2002 with the 14th pick. Thomas will still shop Jones' and
Dickau's expiring contracts, totaling nearly $6 million, all summer.

Acquiring Lewis is no longer realistic because the Knicks will not add David
Lee to a sign-and-trade package. An offer of Jamal Crawford, Nate Robinson,
Renaldo Blakman probably won't do it. Orlando and Miami are top candidates if
Lewis doesn't re-sign with Seattle.

The Knicks still could use a big man with defensive attributes, such as free
agent P.J. Brown. They also can use an established 3-point shooter, such as
Miami guard Jason Kapono. But in Nichols, the Knicks got a player whom they
feel can come off screens and hit perimeter bombs.

Nichols will sign a non-guaranteed contract and could beat out Robinson or
Dickau at training camp.

Though the Knicks could field five starters capable of scoring 30 points in a
game, defense is a big concern, especially with a frontline of Eddy Curry and
Randolph, who are not intimidators or shot-blockers.

However, Thomas said he's not concerned with interior defense.

"We do a good job of defending the paint," Thomas said. "We were not as good
