It takes a very special type of basketball player to capture the hearts of
Knicks fans in his rookie season, and in 2006-07, Renaldo Balkman was indeed
that type of player.

Drafted out of the University of South Carolina late in the 2006 first round,
Balkman came to New York as a relative unknown, but instantly won the fans
over with his exceptional defense and tremendous hustle. Few players in the
NBA give their teams as much spark off the bench as Balkman.

With one season already in the books, Balkman is poised for bigger and better
things in 2007-08. NYKnicks.com recently caught up with Balkman for this
exclusive interview:

Question: How did it feel to progress into a real fan favorite, especially in
your rookie year?
Q:對於球迷熱情支持的看法?
Balkman: It was a great, great feeling to become one of the fan favorites. It
meant a whole lot more than most realize.

Question: What is that, exactly?
Q:詳細說說看。
Balkman: I go out there and give my all, and that's what the fans want. They
want to see guys go out and leave it all out there on the court, and that's
what I do. It feels great to be recognized for that.

不賴。
Question: How was the NBA Summer League different this year from last year
when you were on the verge of your first taste of NBA life?
Q: 夏季聯盟今年和去年有何不同感覺?
Balkman: The first year was more me getting used to the game, but this year I
was a guy with more confidence. I went out and just played, and I tried to
work on my jump shot and a few other things I couldn't do last year as well.
After how I played my first year, I had a lot of confidence going into this
summer.
B:第一年都還在適應，但今年我更有自信，開始在去年做不好的部分下功夫，如投籃
還有其他方面，經過去年適應，今年滿懷信心進入夏天。
Question: Do you think you made a statement in shutting down some big names
at the NBA Summer League, including Kevin Durant?
Q:夏季聯盟比賽中你鎖了一些名氣不錯的球員，如Kevin Durant。
Balkman: My game is about defense. That's what I love to do. By going up
against the number two pick in the draft, it wasn't about me proving a point,
but it was about showing how I can play defense. I want to be known
throughout the league as a defensive stopper, so I just go out there, give it
my all, and I usually stop them.
B:我的工作就是防守，我熱愛的工作，對上榜眼，單純證明我能防守，我想讓大家認為
我是聯盟的大鎖，所以我盡全力且都能有效封鎖它們。
Question: Obviously the big story for the Knicks over the off-season was
adding Zach Randolph. How do you feel about having him in the front court?
Q:Z-BO 加入的看法?
Balkman: He's a great player. I mean, who doesn't want him? Who doesn't want
two big guys in the middle with he and Eddy (Curry), and a big three-guard in
Q (Quentin Richardson). Then you've got fire with me and David Lee coming off
the bench. We are going to be all right.
Q:他很棒呀，誰不想要有這樣的球員，配上 Eddy，還有外線的 Q，然後板凳還有火熱
的LEE跟我，我們帥呆了。
Question: Fans love watching you go up for one of your monster dunks. What
goes through your mind during that?

Balkman (laughing): That's just all smiles and fun for me, man! I'm loving
it.
B:科科，很有趣阿~ 我陶醉其中。
Question: Finally, what did Isiah Thomas bring out of you that you didn't
know you had last season?
Q:最後，老湯帶給你甚麼，過去一球季所未有的?
Balkman: Oh, man. I can say so many things, but I have to say confidence. I
mean, everybody's got confidence, but when you have to go to the next level,
you need another step of confidence. And that's me. I was confident. I knew I
could play, but it's like, now for sure, I am confident that I can not only
play in this league, but I can make a difference in the game.
B:OH~ 很多勒，不過我必須說的那就是自信，我意思是每個人都獲得信心，但當你必須
升等時，你需要另一層面的跨越，我有信心，我知道我能打，不只是這個層級，我能在
比賽中變身。
