The Knicks got their annual Media Day off to a fast start on Monday,
announcing the signing of four players, including two newcomers who brought
the training-camp roster to 20 players.
First, Knicks President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach Isiah Thomas
announced that guard/forward Demetris Nichols and guard Jared Jordan have
been signed to contracts.
Later in the day, Thomas announced that free agent guards Walker Russell, Jr.
and Roderick Wilmont have also been signed to contracts.
Nichols was drafted by Portland Trail Blazers with the 53rd overall selection
in the 2007 NBA Draft and was acquired by New York on draft night in exchange
for a 2008 second round draft pick. Jordan was drafted by the Los Angeles
Clippers with the 45th overall selection in the 2007 Draft and was acquired
Sunday in exchange for cash considerations.
Nichols, 6-8, 215-pounds, averaged 10.9 points in 123 games during his
four-year career at Syracuse University. The 22-year old, Boston, MA native
led the Big East Conference with 18.9 points per game in 2006-07 and was
selected First Team All-Big East.
As a member of the Knicks’ entry in the 2007 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas
earlier this year, Nichols averaged 15.6 points, on 52.6-percent shooting,
and 2.6 assists in five games (four starts).
Jordan, 6-2, 190-pounds, averaged 13.1 points and 6.9 assists in 117 career
games (108 starts) at Marist College. The 22-year old, Hartford, CT native
averaged 17.2 points and 8.7 assists as a senior in 2006-07 and became the
first player since Avery Johnson to lead the nation in assists in NCAA
Division 1 for two consecutive seasons.
Russell, 6-0, 170-pounds, averaged 5.6 points, 3.6 assists in 15 games with
Fort Worth of the NBA D-League last season. The Rochester, MI native attended
Chipola Junior College in Chipola, FL before spending his final two
collegiate seasons at Jacksonville State where he led the team in scoring,
assists and free-throw percentage as a senior.
Wilmont, 6-4, 205-pounds, averaged 12.6 points and 5.8 rebounds during his
senior year at Indiana University in 2006-07. The Miramar, FL native averaged
4.5 points, 1.8 rebounds and 9.0 minutes in four games as a member of the
Knicks’ entry in the 2007 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
