The morning after the Knicks played their best game of the season — and
without Stephon Marbury — Marbury left the team again.

Marbury dressed Wednesday night but did not play in the 108-90 victory over
the Cleveland Cavaliers because of flulike symptoms. At Thursday’s practice,
the flulike symptoms had developed into a mixture of illness and personal
reasons, and Marbury had taken his third leave from the team since the death
of his father, Donald E. Marbury.

Marbury has missed 6 of the last 9 games, and Coach Isiah Thomas said Marbury
would not make the trip to Charlotte, N.C., for Friday night’s game against
the Bobcats (9-14). Thomas said that Marbury’s personal problems were
related to his father’s death.

When asked if he was confident that Marbury could eventually return and
contribute, Thomas paused and slowly said: “He’s really having a rough
time. You know, I just hope that he can come out of this because this has

Marbury’s father had chest pains while he was watching the Knicks play

attack at St. Vincent’s Hospital.
Marbury returned to the Knicks on Dec. 7, a day after the funeral on Coney
Island, and played in a limited role in two games before he left the team
again Dec. 9. He missed four games, returned to practice Sunday and played in
a 27-point loss Monday night to the Pacers.
He also missed a game in November when he left during a trip because he was
angry about his role on the team.
Marbury said at practice Sunday that he was ready to get back to work and was
looking forward to moving on with the season. He also said that at times
during the grieving process he wondered whether he wanted to play basketball
anymore, and he would re-evaluate the priorities in his life. Now he is gone
again.

Thomas said the Knicks would give Marbury as much time as he needed.
Without Marbury, the Knicks played cohesively and fluidly against Cleveland
on the same day a rally was held outside the Garden calling for Thomas to be
fired. Eddy Curry, who was in foul trouble, sat with Marbury on the bench for
almost the entire first half as the Knicks clicked as they rarely had this
season.

Curry picked up two fouls in the game’s first 2 minutes 5 seconds and sat
for the rest of the half as the Knicks built a 13-point lead. Without Marbury
and Curry, the Knicks displayed sharp ball movement and had 11 assists and 63
points at halftime. The Knicks (8-17) shot a season-high 56.2 percent in the
game, which was their only double-digit victory of the season.

The Knicks rank 22nd in the N.B.A. in scoring (94.2 points a game), 27th in
field-goal percentage (43.3 percent) and 30th in assists (17.2).

David Lee, who had scored in single digits more often than not this season,
thrived in the unselfish, energetic offense while spelling Curry. He scored
17 of his team-high 22 points in the first half and played 38 minutes against

“In a game where we’re clicking like that, it’s almost as if everybody can
feel that we’re doing the right things,” Lee said. “After the game, Isiah

re moving the ball and different guys are getting shots. That gets everybody
involved and makes you want to play that much harder on defense and in
transition.”

Lee said that he was ready to contribute whenever called upon, but that he
was not stumping for any more time.

The Knicks’ inspired performance came on the heels of a frustrated Thomas
publicly questioning his players’ desire after Monday’s loss to the Pacers.

Smiles and sleep have been hard to come by. Thomas and Lee said they slept
much sounder Wednesday night after they had stayed up late worrying about the
team’s struggles recently.
