[外電] Isiah: We need a point guard

SEATTLE – Before the West Coast trip ended in another heartbreaker tonight
with Seattle native Nate Robinson missing a trey at the buzzer, Isiah Thomas
made an admission that the KnicksNew York Knicks  are in need of a point
guard to move forward.

Thomas blamed this season’s disaster on not having stability at the point
guard position. Although Thomas has handed the keys to Jamal CrawfordJamal
Crawford , he knows he’s not the prototype point guard.


Thomas was not ripping Stephon MarburyStephon Marbury , just pointing out
facts. His crazy season was ruined by their early feud, the death of his
father, the confusingly long bereavement leave and, ultimately, his decision
to have ankle surgery.

It was poetic Crawford and Robinson alternated their awful nights in the
Pacific Northwest. Crawford was the goat Friday night in Portland (6 for 27).
Robinson wore the horns tonight in Seattle, going 0 for 9, 0 for 6 from
3-point range. The Robinson-Crawford tandem started in the backcourt last
night.

“Most championship teams have to have the right point guard to orchestrate
(things),’’ Thomas said. “That’s been a problem for us this year.
Injuries are part of the game.’’

“We have enough abilities and good defensive players, we can cover for guys
who may have some problems athletically,’’ Thomas added. “But we have had
some ups and downs particularly at the key position. We’re trying to
overcome that now.’’

It was Thomas’ first admission that if Marbury had played as well as last
season, things would have been different. On Friday in Portland, Thomas made
a key remark that the Knicks’ struggles had nothing to do with Zach
Randolph, saying if the same things happened this year with last year’s
crew, things would still be the same.

Thomas’ remarks seems to indicate the Knicks will seek a point guard at the
Feb. 21 trading deadline as their No. 1 priority. Mike Bibby, Jason Williams
and Seattle’s Luke Ridnour reportedly are available. The Knicks have
inquired about Bibby.
