    Woodson and Anthony’s Relationship Is Critical One

    The coach of the Atlantic Division-leading 76ers, Doug Collins,
    does not have to worry about pleasing a superstar. Doug Collins
    doesn’t have one, which may be good for his immediate job
    security but doesn’t necessarily bode well for the long run.

    七十六人的教練 Collins 不用煩惱如何去跟手下的超級巨星搞好關係，因為
    他手上根本沒有超級巨星（XD）。雖然說長期來看不是好處，但至少對他目
    前能否保住這份工作來說可能還不賴。

    “I coached Michael Jordan, who was always a coach’s ally,” he
    said. “I coached Grant Hill, who was always a coach’s ally. My
    experience is that the greatest players I ever had have always
    allowed me to coach them.”

    Collins 表示：「我執教過 Jordan, 他永遠跟教練站同一陣線，我也執教

    After one memorable week as the Knicks’ interim coach, Mike
    Woodson would agree — even if Woodson “can’t explain” why
    Carmelo Anthony had little interest in hustling for Mike D’Antoni
    but has exerted himself for Woodson during a winning streak that
    reached five games Wednesday with a fiercely contested 82-79 win
    over the 76ers.

    Isn’t it obvious why? Anthony has had no choice after using his
    credibility lifeline to win his war of wills with the now-departed
    D’Antoni.

    有選擇？

    It had to become D’Antoni’s fault that Anthony’s debut in New
    York, while not lacking in pomp, had precipitated an extraordinary
    and unflattering set of circumstances. After Anthony introduced
    himself by firing up jumpers as if Madison Square Garden were
    Rucker Park, the production of several teammates diminished and
    the Knicks failed to win a playoff game. About a third of the way
    through this lockout-shortened season, D’Antoni handed Anthony’s
    ball to Jeremy Lin.

    當初那個大排場的超級巨星降臨紐約時，或許這一切注定是冷笑話的問題了。

    fault?

    Not unless he was ready to be accountable for himself as well as
    how much his apparent pouting affected the team.

    His recent statement — “The last three games, my focus was to
    have an energy that I haven’t had so far this season” — was
    really quite amazing, coming from a player making $18.5 million
    this season, or the eighth-highest salary in the N.B.A.

    It may also have been the most honest thing he has said since
    becoming a Knick.

    Say this for Woodson: He put Anthony’s dereliction of duty in its
    proper context when he noted that the Knicks “probably wouldn’t
    be sitting here in this position fighting for the playoffs” if
    Anthony had not used D’Antoni to shield himself from the pressure
    of the New York stage. And since Woodson was putatively in charge
    of the defense when Anthony decided he didn’t have to play any,
    the immediate turnaround should not solely be a referendum on D’
    Antoni.

    Anthony wasn’t the first star player to be placated by having his
    coach thrown overboard. Much as Collins could romanticize life
    with Jordan, His Airness was not above dictating front office
    moves in Chicago, and no doubt had some role in Collins getting
    his job there, and losing it. At the Garden, even the ever-
    perspiring Patrick Ewing staged a work slowdown until Don Nelson
    was escorted to the westbound lane of the Lincoln Tunnel.

    Melo 不是第一個把教練丟進海裡之後，需要被安撫的明星球員，就像 Collins

    The make-or-break relationship with the superstar is part of the
    pro coach’s life, and when a team turns 180 degrees in the wake
    of one’s firing, Collins said you can’t help but feel like
    Hester Prynne of “Scarlet Letter” fame, only “with a capital L,
    for loser.”

    Moving forward, the question beyond why Anthony tuned out D’
    Antoni is whether he has enough character to walk that behavioral
    tightrope for Woodson in the many fragile moments to come when the
    Knicks linger between success and circus.

    Those who observed Anthony for the seven and a half years that he
    was the designated gunslinger in Denver say that he never had to
    deal with expectations close to what he signed on for in New York.
    However much Coach George Karl had to grit his teeth, the Nuggets
    were thrilled to have a promotable star. When they lost in the
    first round of the playoffs in all but one of Anthony’s years
    there, few considered them to have enough talent in a conference
    dominated by the Lakers and Spurs.

    In the Eastern Conference, most big games look like Wednesday
    night’s, down and dirty, and for that reason it was the most
    impressive victory of Woodson’s five. The Knicks played inspired,
    double-teaming defense. They shared the ball.

    Anthony didn’t shoot very much or well but his gorgeous touch
    pass in the fourth quarter to an encouragingly spry Amar’e
    Stoudemire — the Knicks’ best player with 21 points and 9
    rebounds — put the Knicks ahead for good. After a 1-for-11 start,
    Lin made several fourth-quarter plays to drag the Sixers face-down
    in the mud.

    Melo 並沒有一直出手但是第四節他華麗的touch pass 給表現最佳的阿罵得分
    ，幫助球隊取得一些領先。在1-11 開場之後，啾咪出手命中了幾個重要 play

    So hopes are soaring again with Anthony happily moving his feet
    and the Knicks now only three games out of first. Collins paid
    homage to them by saying they suddenly bear little resemblance to
    the team Philly whacked at the Garden two Sundays ago.

    Collins meant a seventh or eighth playoff seed for the Knicks, who
    could conceivably add a sequel to 1999, the last lockout season,
    when a dysfunctional Knicks team came together to upset top-seeded
    Miami in the first round on the way to the N.B.A. finals.

    That is assuming the Knicks, still a game under .500 and in a
    dogfight with Milwaukee for the eighth spot in the East, do make
    the playoffs. Win and new coach notwithstanding: there are 19
