Tyson Chandler is never one to toot his own horn, possibly one of the
reasons he has never made an All-Star Team, but when the subject of
the Defensive Player of the Year Award was raised, Chandler admitted
he hopes to be considered for it.

At the morning shootaround, Knicks interim coach Mike Woodson said
his center “absolutely’’ is a candidate while Chandler revealed
it’s been a secret goal.

“It would mean an awful lot to me,’’ Chandler said. “That was
one of my goals coming into the season. I felt I put myself right
in the thick of things for consideration. I personally feel like
I deserve it. It would be a great honor.’’

Chandler, now averaging a double-double at 11.2 points and 10.0
rebounds, never griped about the All-Star snub when Pacers center
Roy Hibbert made the team over him. But that was earlier in the
season and now the Knicks look to be a playoff team and are playing
as good a defense as any club in the league in the 16 games under
Woodson.

Woodson acknowledged they wouldn’t be close to the kind of defensive
club they are now without their 7-1 center being the glue.

“Absolutely, without a doubt,’’ Woodson said regarding Chandler’s
candidacy for DPOY. “Without a doubt. He’s done everything to put us
in the position where we are today. You don’t find that many centers
committed like he is, who don’t have any hidden agendas. It’s not
about Tyson Chandler. It’s always about the team. That speaks for
volumes. There’s a reason he was part of a team in Dallas that won
a title. He’s a true pro. He should be considered for it.’’

Indeed, the award would be the right makeup call for another
All-Star snub.
