Knicks Chris Smith out 3 to 6 months
Today the New York Knicks announced that guard Chris Smith will be out 3 to 6
months due to left patella tendon surgery. Smith had a great opportunity to
make the team, but right now his injury opens the door for someone else to
make the team.

Melo, Woody: It's 'great' to have Baron back


瓜，武僧:"大鬍子能回來真的很棒!!


Mike Woodson and Carmelo Anthony thought of that immediately when they were
asked about the veteran point guard being at the Knicks' practice facility on
Tuesday.

They both smiled right away, excited that Davis, who suffered a serious right
knee injury in last season's playoff round against the Heat, is still
involved with the Knicks through different on- and off-the-court initiatives.

Melo: "He's a character. That's my man. It's great to just to have him
around, his personality, him being around us, especially after what happened
last year. We miss him. But it's good to have him back."
Woodson: "It's been great, man. I mean, I have the utmost respect for Baron
and what he gave us last year. For him to go down like he did, man, I
wouldn't want to wish that on anybody. But he's still a part of our family
and players that are here love seeing him back and being around us. We've
just got to get him rehabbed back where he can be able to do some things from
a conditioning standpoint for himself to make him feel mentally better than
where he is right now, because he's still hobbling and trying to get back."

Davis, who was not made available to the media on Tuesday, will have a
multifaceted role with the Knicks this season. According to sources, he will
spend some time around the players as an adviser; will work with MSG's Garden

Woody: Smith can be NBA's best sixth man

While Smith said on on Friday that he would prefer to be in that position
after the past five seasons mostly coming off the bench in Denver and New
York, head coach Mike Woodson said on Tuesday after practice that he has not
made up his mind.

"I'll evaluate tomorrow. We'll walk through some things and then I'll make
that decision," he said. "Right now, James White is out and Ronnie Brewer is
out. I kind of like J.R. where he is in terms of coming off the bench. But he
can start, too. You just never know. At this point, I haven't made that
decision yet."

Woodson said that he's leaning toward using Smith as his sixth man, like last
year, to balance out on the offense. With Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire
and Raymond Felton, the Knicks will have three go-to scorers to start the
game, and Brewer and Tyson Chandler can focus on defense and intangibles.

said. "He can be the best player coming off the bench in this league, and
perhaps win the Sixth Man Award. Hopefully that parlays us into a lot of wins
and getting us to a championship round because at the end of the day, that's
what we're in it for."

When asked if he had shared that vision with Smith, Woodson said yes -- and
Smith, who recognizes it's more important to finish games, understood the
coach's likely game plan.

"Absolutely," Woody said. "J.R.'s about winning, and I have no other reasons
not to expect that. I mean, J.R. and I are on the same page because I'm on
the coach and he's the player, and we'll figure it out as we go along."

Anthony also said that Smith, now his teammate for the seventh straight
season, will embrace whatever opportunity comes his way.

"At the end of the day, J.R.'s got to be ready, whether he's a starter or
whether he's the sixth man," he said. "If Coach Woody wants him to start,
he'll start. If not, he'll come off the bench."

"I think disappointed is an understatement,'' J.R. said of Mike Woodson's
remarks that he likes him off the bench. "My whole process of getting better
this summer and everything I went through was to be in that starting role. It
was great to be able to have put all that work in and understand what I can
do and my body can withhold without starting. I think it just makes our bench
even stronger.''
